My professor told the class that Ubuntu with Gnome 3 will conquer all the PCs and companies within a few years. He said that he had discussions with many technological experts. He had experience with apple mac os, windows, other linux versions such as fedora, suse etc..
He also said that windows will have the same fate as netscape or yahoo.
Then I installed ubuntu 12.04 with gnome3 instead of the default unity desktop. It is fantastic. It is awesome.
Now I also think that this is going to happen. But many comeercial companies and marketing side are not giving publicity, because ubuntu is completely free.
Will it happen? Will Ubuntu replace windows in every desktop, laptop, university computers, companies?

I doubt it, Microsoft has too much of a grip on things, and will do all they can to stay at the top. Don't forget, most new computers sold come pre-loaded with Windows, so they have a huge advantage over everyone else, and for the average computer user, Linux simply doesn't exist.
    Money talks - loudly.

The lowest common denominator usually wins.

    Is that you Mark Shuttleworth?

Matter of interest, have you tried out KDE?

Microsoft won't disappear until every pc game can be played (and played well) on linux.

Cinnamon is a fork of GNOME shell, hardly going to be much difference. KDE is a mature desktop environment.

I really believe Microsoft will be like Kodak in 10 years time. The move away from the desktop is gaining momentum and the corrosion of their dominance is plan to see. The comsumer desktop market is all but dead. Android based devices will all but destroy Windows for normal day-to-day use.

The business market is different but I noticed an huge sway to all things open source in the market place I work in. Unless Microsoft blind side us with a device (or OS) strategy soon I forsee their demise !

I would love to see what would happen if MS open their source for a knock-down version of Windows. Embedded and Mobile code - open. It would certainly stir things up a bit?

I read a very interesting article, I think it was after the announcement that Ballmer was stepping down, on how MS have been stifling innovation for years and that morale is really quite low in the company. The most famous example was the Courier, which was a tablet which MS pulled funding for because it was concerned a touch-screen interface would have negative impact on Windows. Then Apple brought out the iPad.

To be blunt I am one of the many people that have stopped using ubuntu because of the constant changes in GUI esp. unity

the worry is that they will go off doing similar again

There is an old saying "if it ain't broke don't fix it"

microsoft followed ubuntu down the "let's put a single application , touch screen GUI on a desktop" and have already backtracked on the missing start button.
