Hi I'm going there next week, I know you can do a flat spin down the islands south of Venice, but are there any easily accessed shortish but challenging routes there? Must be reasonably accessible since I'll be with the mot and will have to rely on goodwill since this is supposed to be a 'romantic getaway'

    Cheers

Venice being a delta isn't going to offer much in terms of climbing challenge. I'd recommend heading north on the train or west to Verona / lake Garda direction for a day trip if you are in venice for a while.

I was there in July and we rented bikes out on Lido. Lido is a very flat island so no challenges here. The rental location only had a mixture of high nelly style bikes, but it was great craic for a couple of hours with the Mrs and great value to

You can get the number 1 water bus (red) from anywhere along the grand canal and the last stop is Lido

Is Lido a place? It means beach... Did you go to an island called beach? I've been to Lido Di Jesolo, which means the beach of Jesolo...

Thanks, looks like I'll be on the hi nelly around lido. Prob for the best, now I can indulge fully in the local beverages!

good choice, the road to and from venice is absolutely treacherous. I stopped in venice on a cycle tour across europe and the 20k either side of the causeway out to venice was by far the worst. the only road available has 4 narrow lanes of speeding lorries that dont have enough space to do anything but brush past. stick to the lido or jump on a train to get a bit further away!
