Importing a Toyota Under Warranty from the UK

Hi Guys,

I'm looking at importing a 2011 Toyota Auris from the UK. The last time I imported a car from the UK I had the AA go check it, then I transferred the money to the dealer, had it collected and delivered to me. This worked rather well and was hassle free.

In the case of this one as the car is only 2 years old and covered by warranty so I'm guessing that should add some peace of mind that if anything goes wrong undetected by the AA it should be covered by Toyota?

I'm also unclear as to the length of the warranty, Toyota UK talk about a 5 year warranty but from what I can see from here it looks like only 3 years are covered in the UK?

So if anyone could advise as to whether (a) the warranty will be valid here in Ireland (looks like it should be from other threads) and cover pretty much anything wrong with the car and (b) if it's 3 or 5 years that would be great.

You will probably find that the warranty is only in the uk. I bought a car few months back from a Honda dealer in uk with a year warranty and I said I'm going to Ireland and is the warranty covered in Ireland. They said after a lot of few calls, that only in Northern Ireland and the car would have to be still uk registered. I imagine it will be similar with toyotA.

We brought in a Hyundai from the UK with a 5 year warranty (where the Irish equivelant was 3 years) and had no issues getting stuff done.

Toyota one may be different though depending on year of car.

Indeed, if it was still under a manufacturer warranty, it would have been covered Europe wide

You'd think so, but I had an issue with a UK import volksgagen piss hat with a busted fuel pump, uk model had 3 year warranty and irish had 2 years, vw Ireland wouldn't over it, told us to go to NI dealer,

Nope! If it was UK registered and then vrt'd here it won't be under warranty here.

It depends on the brand. Some manufacturers cover the first few years, then the dealer network covers subsequent years. In this case the subsequent years aren't transferable abroad AFAIK.

An example, the 8 year warranty on mitsubishis in Ireland at the moment.

It was a Lexus I had the experience with, wouldn't cover it if it wasn't UK registered

Was looking at an 11 reg avensis in Toyota dealer in belfast recently. Confirmed by dealer there that it was 5 yr warranty on car there. Once registered and brought Sth it was 3 yr warranty down here. Even if I brought it to NI Dealer after year 3 I would not be covered.

You're correct about Toyota in this case, the first 3 years is a worldwide warranty but the extra 2 years is covered by the dealer network/ importer in the uk only, basically they decided to do this off there own back over there to increase sales

It's a 2008 vauxhall. And it was a Honda UK warranty I don't think I was misinformed. That's just the way it is With this particular warranty.

How much did transport cost ?

I'd be nervous handing money over and waiting for delivery.

Did you do a bank transfer ?

What happens if you don't get the car ?

Getting the AA to check it though does give peace of mind when you don't see the car I suppose ?

That was a used car warranty as opposed to manufacturers so not the same thing.

It was about €300 and had it delivered to my door same day as collected in Newcastle, great service!

I transferred the money to a dealer in advance of collection, spoke to them a few times, there was an email trail etc so I was reasonably confident that they'd not run off with my money!

I know next to nothing about cars so having test driven the model here I was happy to go with the inspection opinion of it (very thorough) and covered the cost of it by getting them to reduce the price by a few hundred based on minor faults found.

I'll let you know if it works out again this time:)

On the warranty front it looks like the 3 year basic one will apply here but not the 2 extra years as expected?
