Need a change from my usual beer...

I am a regular heineken drinker... (go out with a mate or two maybe once a fortnight...) but lately (namely two weeks ago and last night) I had four pints... two in two different bars and while I don't think there was anything wrong with the pints taste wise I had a banging head this morning where I normally would be otherwise fine.

Think I'm getting tired of Heineken... I don't mind trying any sort of beer and often do including craft beers but I normally revert back to my safe usual.

Any ideas on what beer I could change over to for a while?

    Thanks.

Galway Hooker is a good starter, it's what I always recommended to Heineken drinkers anyway. I never understand this thing were people like to stick with something "safe" though.

Ha... I know... Its just the usual i revert to when it takes me longer then 30 seconds to figure out what i want for the first pint of the night!

Well try that one out... Thanks for the recommendation.

Another one to try is metalman pale ale.
Irish goat has more experience than me however when it comes to recommending beers but you won't go wrong with metalman or Galway Hooke anyway.
If you like those, after a while you should try a few ipa's. then try a Heineken after that and you'll wonder how you drank it all your life.

It seems to me that Metalman PA is fast becoming the go to everyday craft beer amongst the beeries. While I'll happily drink O Hara's IPA, Howling gale, Sabbotage, Purgatory etc., if I was to choose one beer that would be on draught in every pub it would be Metalman (or maybe Barrelhead if it was in regular production).

Wouldn't it be funny if people started to say things like "I'm a Metalman man" and refused to drink anything else - especially not another pale ale.

Server: "Sorry, we don't have Metalman but we have Blarney bolnde, O'Hara's IPA and Sierra Nevada pale ale"
Punter (under breath) : "What kind of effing pub is this..?" (aloud) "Oh, I'll have a glass of red wine, so"

Any sign of Metalman canning or bottling their beer?

Not the last time I asked them :( I'd be happy to see it north of the border...

On the subject of Metalman, I've seen it convert even diehard lifelong Guinness drinkers to the Pale side so you never know what'll happen yet!

Go to the craft beer festival in RDS this weekend and try them all!

My road as a drinker has been long, winding and unpredictable with good times and bad. ;-)

People should drink whatever they like best, I agree that the whole craft beer thing can be overdone a little by people.

That said the beers I live just happen to fall under the craft beer umbrella.

When I started drinking I was drinking Bulmers and Bud. Then it was Fosters, Bavaria and whatever was cheap. Start drinking Guinness then in the colder months and Heineken was my go to lager. Then I started liking wheat beers and started to experiment more.

Now my drink in a beer with little choice would be Guinness in the winter or Smithwicks if I want something lighter.

However I really like ales and pale ales and still give wheat beers a blast, so in a pub with a good selection these would be my first picks. I could never go back to Bud now as all I taste is water and gas. That's not meant to sound snobby it's just that my palate has adjusted from trying different things,.just like a kids food preferences change over time.

I've started brewing at home now. Have an English ale almost ready and a really hoppy IPA is following that. After that it will be a strong (at least 6%) stout or a wheat beer.

Bottom line, don't be shy and experiment! I still love the fact I discovered the taste of a good pale ale.
