Help! Ceiling covered in flies!!

Every evening when I put my 9-month old to bed, the ceiling is covered in hundreds, maybe thousands, of small black flies. They are about 3mm long and they congregate in bunches in the corner of the room. They are there whether I have the windows open or not and they come in while it is still bright outside (so its not a light attracting them in).

Weirdly, only the baby's room has the flies. The other two rooms upstairs have no flies at all. Not one. Weird.

I end up hoovering the ceiling every evening, since it started about 10 days ago. Any ideas!! ?? Photos below. It's an old farmhouse in the countryside and there are fireplaces in the bedroom, in case that makes a difference.

PS if I have this in the wrong forum, please tell me. I just reckoned DIYers might have some suggestions to fix the problem...

If that was me, I would check to see, if there was anything attracting the flies above the ceiling. Maybe a bird or something, got into your attic and died. Removing it, would mean that they would disappear quicker.

we have a similar problem - we are hoovering them up too - but we did a bit of research and are going to try this http://insects.about.com/od/insectssociety/qt/Make-A-Vinegar-Trap-For-Fruit-Flies.htm

flies in general (i think) like sugar - so might even work with some sweetened water...nothing to lose...best of luck.

If it was me i would try find out if they are hatching in the room or flying in.... seal the room (inc the fireplace) and see if they arrive the next day...

Other things i would think of doing is checking attic and repainting the room..

Something simarlar happened my brother in their living room they were inundated with flies. They got their chimney cleaned and there was a dead bird up there. Once the bird was gone no more flies.

Hopefully for you it will something straight forward like that it's always worse when it's a babies room as you worry more.

I hope you get it sorted out soon
