One day a week maybe.. But ONE DAY ~ a total waste of council money.

I doubt anyone expects to learn to become proficient in defending themselves in one day.

What you can learn in one day are simple things like precautions (mostly common sense) which can reduce your chances of being attacked, and some strategies about how to deal with verbal abuse etc.

For many people, even being physically confronted is such an unprecedented event that they freeze on the spot and suffer trauma from the event. If the one-day course exposes them to even a simulation of that it can be helpful.

Perhaps also the course will deal with issues such as your legal situation in the event of being forced to physically defend yourself.

So, let's not get too dismissive. It's probably a self-defence awareness day.

Self defense course invokes image of training in a Krav Maga or red man environment which is not what a course like this would actually be about. It would be more a one day awareness , with some break away and deescalation techniques also.

Awareness or defence, a day will teach ya nothing. Maybe one or 2 cool tricks to show your friends in the pub for when someone tries to punch the air 3 inches from your face

I've done a few of those type of courses in work (I don't work in security or anything, but I deal ith the public) and I don't think the people who are teaching them are really qualified to teach that stuff.

It always seemed to be martial artists. But there's nothing about a martial arts background that equips anyone to teach others about non verbal and verbal de-escalation techniques and situatonal awareness. I have no idea who the council are employing to do it. But in my field it's always been some guy with a black belt in whatever and big muscles, who has never been a small frightened intimidated person facing a much tougher aggressor.

Over riding feeling in my game after these courses was always that most of us had more experience in dealing with a much bigger aggressor than the instructors did.

Lots of guys offering courses etc in this stuff in Irish Figher etc, but I always look at them and wonder what qualifies them. It's a very unique person who can genuinely impart that kind of knowledge to people, in my humbler.

To get efficient at anything takes years and years of practise and sacrifice and sparring in Fighting terms, been told to do some silly self defense moves without experience of resisting against someone is a waste of time and money.

I don't think there is a formal qualification for teaching it, and that's part of the problem. Also 90% of the stuff you find on YouTube is rubbish.

When I have given self-defence lessons (which are free) I always start by explaining my limited experience in self-defence combat situations. About 50% of the time in my classes is not about physical self-defence, but rather about recognising potentially dangerous situations and what strategies work best for avoidance. People always want to do some of the "physical stuff" so I will teach just one or two basic striking techniques and some escape techniques, nothing more. There's no point in demonstrating karate as a means of self-defence because honestly, unless you're putting the time into karate training, you cannot apply the techniques in combat. When it comes to kicks, my best advice is "don't kick". Untrained people should not kick in self-defence as it's just asking for trouble.

Give me 8 hours and I can cover all that and we can have some fun. You won't be proficient, but you'll be marginally wiser. I don't charge for self-defence classes, but if it makes you want to do karate, I charge for teaching karate.

The best training you can do in one day is just don't get yourself into trouble :)

Interesting post here on self defense for men, which focusses primarily on fight avoidance and de-escalation. While the author is a very solid fighter, it doesn't make any attempts to teach any kind of fighting. Seems reasonable that something like this could be taught in a day and would provide some genuine benefit in certain circumstances.

nothing physical can be learned in a day. Consider any physical skill, carpentry, painter etc. They do a 45 hour week for 4 years before they are consider competent. Why would something as complicated as fighting be any easier?

    Good analogy.
