Just a heads up; my parents oil tank (filled that day with 300euro worth) was syphoned the other night. Ballybrit area. Not sure Im doing any good by flagging it up here but just been vigilant. Gutted for them.

Thanks for sharing, at least now people can take what precautions they can.
I'm sure your parents already did, but notify Gardai so they can keep track.

You definitely need to talk to the guards. It seems quite a coincidence that the oil was stolen just after a delivery of oil.

Well, if you want to rob oil, what better way than to follow a tanker? I am not suggesting the oil companies or their employees are involved BTW. The only real solution, IMHO, is to have your tank inside a secure shed.

going to be pricey to do that safely, see requirements here

Once you look at enclosing an oil storage tank you open yourself up to a whole set of legal, regulatory, environmental and safety requirements. In other words, there's a reason they are out in the open 99% of the time

There are other alternatives such as alarms, lighting, cctv etc. But, thanks to our government, they are now much more expensive.

The OP needs to be wary as there have been cases of houses being repeatedly targeted.

The back of our house is into a main-ish road, and all the oil tanks in the row of houses are right up against the back walk: very easy for a van to pull in off the road, rob the oil and drive away. The way these tanks are placed in the gardens leaves no room for a shed; hard to explain it but no way a shed would fit. Thanks tho, parents did alert the guards just as a matter of due course but naturally nothing could be done. Just be vigilant.

How about a lean to style roof bolted to the wall & protecting the tank from anyone outside the garden.

This happened to me last year also, Galway seem rife with this type of theft.
It's a particularly scummy thing to do IMO.

See if you can get security fencing for around it. There are a few things here that might help.
