Running on a beach: What footwear to use?

I'm doing a 5k race today on a beach. I haven't ran on a beach in about 6 years, and back then, did it barefoot, but it was one of those pristine beaches, and I was only training.

Do any of you do any sort of regular running on sand? What footwear do you think I should use? I think I should wear something, a stray piece of glass, shells or jellyfish doesn't appeal much to me.

    Standard runners will do.

Light racing flats ideal, no cushioning required.

Cheers. Might go with a bit of a beaten up old pair of (close to) racing flats. No point getting either of the newer pairs full of sand. For some mental reason, I was considering spikes!

I'd also wear double layer socks to prevent friction issues with sand

it may be too late, but forgot to mention where high socks, not ankle sock. sands gets into ankle socks.

    How about something like this:
    Heatons sell these too
About as minimal as you can get. I've been walking about in these and a pair of crocs all summer and my feet have never felt better, great for stretching out the calf as well. I did a few short runs on the local pitch in them and they were okay, be ideal for sand.

I have a pair of these Inov8 Evoskins. Ideal when you want to run barefoot but are cautious of glass or whatever.

Cheers lads. Race went well anyway. Went with old beaten up Elixirs. There was a lot of very uneven ground, so I was glad I wasn't in something completely flat. Double socks worked a treat too.
