U could up the protein a bit but by sounds of it your not bringing him out enough , bring him to the lake lad couple times a week nothing builds a dog like swimming .

Was the illness you or the dog. If it was you, was the dog walked regularly while you were off sick?

Im not an expert, but if he is unfit, its like training anyone or thing who is unfit, regular exercise and increment it regularly. Take him out somewhere, no guns, run him hard, bit of swimming, bring him home, let him sleep it off, next day same again, build him up. Keep doing that, he'll be back in no time. Springers are great at recovery. They love water, and swimming is great for fitness, so if you can him in somewhere, that would be great.

I'd cut down on the baileys to be honest.
