Does my vision warrant getting laser eye surgery done?

    Hi everyone,

I’m 25 and I’m considering getting laser eye surgery. Just wondering on whether people think it’s really necessary depending on my current vision as I’m not sure how bad it is. I hate wearing glasses on a daily basis, whether its going out to the shops, in college or whatever. I’ve been wearing them for around 3 years in total now. I think I never noticed I needed them before getting them. According to my optomotrist my vision is stable.

As I’m still a student this is a lot of money for me at the moment and I want to make sure I am making the right decision. I went for a consultation before and I was told that my eyes are suitable to get laser eye surgery done. They recommended getting the left eye done only as they said the right eye isnt so bad and they said it gets more difficult to perform the surgery for smaller prescriptions. I would be however going a different laser eye clinic this time around.

I always found contact lenses uncomoftable to use while working at a computer and I’m not sure I’ve been wearing the best ones as the vision has never been as good as my glasses. They’re also expensive enough too. I’ve been wearing pretty expensive ones, they cost 90 Euro for 30 pairs. I’m not sure if the prescrption was the most accurate possible though. I’m considering experimenting with a couple of new contact lenses in the next month anyway.

The goal of getting laser eye surgery would be to have eyesight that I know isnt perfect but that still improves my confidence a lot on a daily basis as hopefully I would only have to wear the glasses when working at a computer screen (if even necessary). Maybe in the future I’d get the right eye done too but I’m happy getting one done at a time (for peace of mind) and getting the right one done right now doesn’t seem very urgent.

I have health insurance so getting the left eye done would cost 1200 Euro.

    My prescription is as follows:

    L -2.50/-1.00 x 175

    R +00/-1.25 x 15

Get them to check which is your dominant eye....or you can do a simple version yourself,

basically interlink your fingers (hands as if you were praying) in front of your nose and close one eye and then the other....you should be able to see nothing through one and sight through another....if it's your worse eye then go ahead.

Mine was my right - and my eye surgery turned out great. I'm now dead on 20/20.

Why I did it (and I was a lot worse) - I'd been wearing lenses since 13, and I didn't realise that you can't wear them forever (I'm 40) was getting more and more eye infections. With me, it was a confidence thing, work had lots of stairs and with glasses everything seems further away and blacker so was afraid of the stairs, driving, rain, the kettle boiling! Best thing I ever did.

Personally, yeah, I'd do it - assuming it's a good clinic.
