drain plug on oil filter housing

Right, so just did an oil change on a car that had one of the older paper type paper filters which I have never replaced before.

I tried to take the filter housing drain plug off first to avoid a mess but it was in so tight that when I tried to unscrew it the whole filter housing came off with the filter inside-oil all over the shop!

Anyway, I still couldnt get the little drain plug out, so just emptied as much oil as I could out, cleaned it up, replaced the O ring and filter and screwed the housing back on. Just wondering is this a big deal, or was it very important to undo the little drain plug?

    thanks

The bolt shape at end of oil filter is part of oil filter to allow you remove the filter with a socket or spanner. It is not a separate bolt as you discovered.

Not on all cars, mk3 mondeo has a drain plug in the bottom of the filter housing.
I misread the post first time but on the mondeo its an allen bolt

It's not important at all. It is just to help to avoid making a mess.
