Returning a troublesome car to a dealer

    Hello all,

I purchased a second hand car this year from a Dealer with a 6 month warranty. After a month of driving I got an oil pressure warning message. When I check the oil stick it was completely dry.

Long story short, I have had the car back 3 times with the dealer to fix the oil issue and a few other reoccurring issues since then, but it is still using oil at ridiculous rate. I have been keeping track of this issue with oil levels and mileage recorded once a week and the car is using approx. 1 Litre of oil for every 500km driven.

I am completely fed up with this now and want rid of the car. Since the dealer has had the car back 3 documented times and the issue has not been resolved or even improved, does anyone know where I stand to get a refund or something?

    What are my options?

Generally when you buy a new car in Ireland you buy directly from a dealer or a garage. You will have a consumer contract with this dealer or garage. Under this contract you have the right to buy a car that is of merchantable quality, as described and fit for its purpose. This means that if there is a fault with the car after you have bought it, the business with whom you have the contract (i.e. the car dealer or garage) must put things right by either repairing the fault or replacing the car. In an extreme situation they may also refund you the cost of the car.
Check the website for the National Consumer Agency too.
Just keep bringing it back until they tire and give you money back :D

Note - none of the opinions expressed is by any means legal advice, just so you know.
