Lightroom & backing up to an external HD

I've just bought two external Toshiba 1TB drives for my photography. I'd like to move all my photos onto one & back-up using the other.

I know i should do this using Lightroom rather than the Finder on my Macbook. I'd like to keep everything on the drives & keep the laptop for my new stuff going forward & transfer it to the external drive every couple of weeks whilst backing up to the second drive.

Can someone advise as to the steps i should take please?

I presume i just copy the files over on to the two drives but how do i manage the catalogue within Lightroom which stores all the processing i've done on the photos.

    Thanks

I have my pc set up with 2 x 2TB drives internally and external NAS drive.
I have the photos back up from C to D and lightroom settings, presets, cat etc. I use a free MS program called SyncToy that I run every few days. It only transfers and new or edited items to the backup drive. very handy piece of kit. Your can select what folders you want it to back up.

Not exactly going to help you as you have a macbook but maybe there is something similar to do the trick.

You Can do the same kind of thing through scheduled tasks in Windows, set up a regular back up that only updates new or changed files in a particular folder. I don't think it would handle connecting and disconnecting the drive to well though.

I'm fairly sure I've heard of software that will let you plug in the external drive and it will automatically back up a certain folder. I'd be very surprised if you couldn't find software that does that.

It would be better to have to done automatically by having backup software watch a folder. With the best of intentions you could miss a file or update a new version with an old version or just simply lose interest after a while when doing it manually.

Don’t forget to backup your Lightroom catalogue files and not just your photographs.

They may need to be reformatted for OSX.
