I canged my two front brake dics didn't change pads, brought car out for short test drive, noticed car took a while to stop. Came back to house and parked got out and smoke was coming from the dics and they were hot. Any body know what is wrong or is that normal.

Did you clean them off with brake cleaner first.? Theres often a coating on them to stop them rusting in storage. Could well be that burning off.

For thw sake of 30 quid you really should have put a new set of pads on too.

No I never cleaned them. Yes I should have got new brake pads as well but never did.

Any imperfection on your old pad will go onto the new disc, get yourself some new pads and pop them on, clean the discs with brake cleaner while you're at it and if the problem still persists then you possibly have a sticky caliper

Don't worry about smoking brake discs, I recently changed mine too, then went for a spin, all 4 brake discs were smoking almost like burning (Had new pads too), all it was just some oil from storage/wrap that got burned.

I would be more worried if you didnt' clean oil and they were not smoking :D

+1. You could do what lazy brake techs do and buy ATE discs. They come sprayed silver and whatever the substance is, it just wears off without contaminating your pads, messing up sensors or setting fire to your car.

What kind of car do you have of which pads cost 160 Eur?
For 190 Euro I got a whole set of brakes (4x discs, 8x pads (2 sets, rear and front), brake shoes for handbrake) that's for bmw for which "parts are supposed to be overpriced".

Its not the car but the materials in the pad. Looking at some uprated pads for my 406 some front pads cost in excess of £300 for example

I use AP Racing 4-pot calipers on the front of mine, hence I have to use 17-inch wheels rather than the boggo 16s. Road pads are €160, racing pads are dearer.

So what? For 190 I can buy a whole lot of pizzas in LIDL. Quantity is not analogous with quality

When I switched to Blueprint pads they smoked a lot to begin with.
Once the coating was gone it was business as usual.
    Scary at first though..

BMW parts are often considered quite reasonable actually. And I don't think I'd be too confident in a car that all of the friction materials replaced for €190. A half decent set of pads all round would cost €150 on their own.

    DIY + Materials = 190 Euro.

Also who the **** pays 150 Euro for pads alone?

P.S - unless you own M6, AMG or Lambo.

I mean seriously what kind of car has OEM pads that cost 150 euro? I would honestly like to know (no criticism intended)

I think Mats post was missed, he uses beefy calipers. And as I said it depends on the materials used in the pad. Want the performance spend the money.....

Plenty of people, I ran Endless Fast road pads which iirc were costing about €225 for the front pads.

I got a full set of ebc for my trafic for 80 euro. Delighted I was.

Pads rear are soo much easyer than drums.

I don't think its all the residue burning. The pad face probably looks like a wave. The tips of the wave are trying to do too much work and overheat. Takes a few spins to break in the pads to the disk. But all is ok
