OK so I'm getting a bike on the cycle to work scheme but to be honest I'm not sure what I'm looking for. Something to cycle in and out of town. Approx 8 miles . would also like it for doing things on the weekend.
Is there anything I should look out for or what makes are good these days as the last bike I had was a GT.

Depends on what you intend to wear whilst riding it.

Depends on what you want it for. If leisure trips of 30+km on weekends are a possibility, you need something comfortable on road spins. If heading for the woods / trails, would need some suspension, wider tyres.
    Depends......
Unless definitely going off road, avoid suspension as it only adds weight, and keep to narrower road / slick type tyres.
There's a great feeling going along at a decent nick which you will get on a road type bike rather than a Mountain bike.
    Budget???
Many here ride roadbikes, (drop-bar) but they are not for everyone. Giant rapid & specialized sirrius are good flat bar bikes for commuting, but you pay a bit extra for the brand (helps with resale though)
On the other hand if its too cheap, its likely to be just that - cheap (& horrible, wouldn't encourage you to cycle it)

'but to be honest I'm not sure what I'm looking for'

need to be more specific to get specific advice

Start here to figure out what kind of "things on weekend" you intend.

It may lead to a more precise question for here.
