Trade in?

Is there anywhere in Dublin that will do a trade in or valuation on a bike? I have a 12 year old Falcon Xanthos road bike in good condition (has been serviced every 12 months, brand new back wheel) that is no longer suitable for my commuting needs and was hoping I could use it as part-payment for a second hand granny type bike. Failing that, and because I have no idea how much she'd be worth, is there anywhere/anyone who could give me a valuation of how much it'd be best to let her go for?

Why not put it up on adverts? Any private price you get will be better than any trade-in value.

I might do that. I have no idea what a fair price would be, though. Simply because it's my bike I'd probably price it too high, but I don't want to undersell either. It's not a type you see around often so I can't go by what others are selling by, which is why I was hoping someone could recommend somewhere or someone who could offer a valuation.

Maybe I'll stick it up at €200 and see what offers I get.

Quick search shows that it's a cheap bike with downtube shifters and a cheap groupset. I'd say a shop probably wouldn't be interested to be honest. One was up on adverts for €190 a year ago and got no interest at all so €200 is a bit on the high side.

Bikes depreciate pretty badly. Not initially as bad as cars mind (a year-old bike will still get 80% of its list price), but to the point that a bike over ten years old usually has a base value of somewhere between €50 and €100 no matter what it cost originally.

There will be some cases where the bike attracts attention from collectors of classics and so is worth a little more, but bikes are generally considered consumables by most people, and decline continually in value no matter how often you have them serviced. It's a bit like selling a luxury fridge. Nobody cares that it cost €2000 new and has been looked at by a technician every year, the thing has been in use for ten years, so it's liable to break any day now.

That's how people look at old bikes.

A few shops used to to trade-ins, but that's largely stopped now because people have such a dim view of second hand bikes. Cyclesuperstore used to do it, but they found that unless the bike was mint condition and only 2/3 years old, then they would never be able to sell it on.

2 Wheels in Sandymount would probably take it as would Stillorgan Cycles ( the one by bowling alley, is it called that? )

By their own admission you would get more in a private sale.

Thanks folks, that's the kind of advice I need. I'll get some photos and lob it on adverts.
