I've heard and read of people having stomach problems when running, but I didn't realise it could get this serious - by mile 16 his "bowel was dead".

I have to say this wouldn't worry me, considering how many people enter marathons/or longer and the number of deaths you likely have more chance being hit by a car crossing the road.

Though I will say I have read about organ issues on longer races then a marathon (50, 100mile+) but not during a marathon, so news to me none the less.
