Mondeo engine noise

    Hey,

I have a 2006 Mondeo 1.8L petrol LX model. I've noticed for the last few months that there's a noise in the engine which sounds like someone playing the Bodhrán!! I can hear it when the car is just ticking over. If I rev the car a little or drive off the noise will disappear.

    Any ideas? Thanks

I think that engine has a DMF, could be wrong though.

Is it really a "KIlmeaden - the Fillet of Cheddar" kind of sound, or is it a somewhat more metallic "tappety-tap"? I'm thinking lifters/cam-followers, or timing-chain tensioner.

its probably the flywheel , if the noise goes away when you press the clutch with the engine idling then its deffo the flywheel.

    Hey,

I tried that trick this morning, and yes the noise goes away when I press the clutch, even if I slightly touch the clutch it goes away!

So am I up shiit creek now with it being the flywheel? I have the car about 9 months now, the noise has been there the whole time, it hasn't got any worse. Is something about to blow up in the engine due to it?!

If it is the DMF you can drive it like that for a while it will get noticeable worse before it will cause problems. Dust will build up in starter and it may fail down the road.

Oh fÚck....... I priced a DMF and they're about €300!!! Not good.. When you say dust will build up in the starter - I've noticed that if the engine is still warm and I go to restart the car again within about 30mins it takes a few secs to start..

They seem to be talking about diesels in that article. Mine is a 1.8 petrol. Before I bought the car I did read that DMF's did fail in Mondeo's but mainly in the diesel Mondeo's and not really in the petrol Mondeo's! So I'm annoyed to find the dmf is now gone! Thanks for the link.

€300 for a DMF is not too bad. It might be easier to get a than the diesel, if it is the same, expect labour in excess of the part.

As the DMF fails it creates metal dust that clog up starter motor and it fails to turn. What you have described sounds like a different fault.
I used the word IF DMF because they are known to give issues on diesel but less likely on petrol.

I advise getting a mechanic to check before you part with cash for parts.

About a month after I bought the car I brought it to my mechanic to get a few things done to it. I mentioned the noise in the engine, he said it was nothing to worry about so I was happy with that... I asked on here a few days ago just because I was concerned that the noise was still there. I had googled it but most were saying DMF only seems to be a problem with the diesel Mondeos.

The part was about €365 on micksgarage.ie but €288 on mister-auto.ie (plus P&P)

When the car is idling and I just barely put my foot on the clutch I can feel an unusual vibration if that's any clue?

Rather than us guessing here, why not bring to a mechanic and ask.

the dmf is a common fault on the 1.8 petrol mondeos , there are kits available to convert it to a solid flywheel if you wish .
