Hi all. I have a 2 acre paddock that is after getting too strong and i was going to cut baled silage off it. The thing is, I applyed cut swarth to the paddock at 2 bags to the acre on the 23rd of july.
That would leave it 6 weeks next tues but i am being advised that it has to be left a min of 8 weeks for baled silage.
Normally i wouldnt care but it is just the neighbour is planning to be cutting at the end of next week and it would be handy to have the contractor roll in straight from his bit as im thinking that it might be hard to get someone to travel a distance just to bale 2 acres in a few weeks time.

Cheers for any advice in advance

Count your units of N applied. As a general rule N is consumed at 2 units per day.
Once the N is consumed you can cut and bale.

Once the N is consumed you can cut and bale.

    So that's 54 units of N applied. (27 * 2)

Two units used a day, therefore 27 days after Fertiliser applied.

You'll be fine cutting it next week.

Also if you could cut at 12 o'clock in the day when the sugars are highest, this would be best.

As regards silage quality does cutting at different times of the day affect it as you mentioned sugars or if you are leaving it a day or 2 to wilt does it make any difference ?
    Just curious
