I train with the Judo club. Great for getting fit, learning self defence or anyone wanting to be a competitive Judoka/Grappler. All done in a friendly atmosphere where everyones trying to help each other improve their game.

We are active on the competitive circuit with intervarsities and judo opens, as well as Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and Submission Wrestling tournaments, which we had great success in last year. Also a few social nights to be had

We have a great coach with loads of experience, equipments provided and the first class is free so come down and give it a go.

I'll be on the stall most of the time on clubs and socs day so if anyone has any Q's feel free to ask me then, email nuimjudo@gmail.com or just message me on boards whenever :)

im not the fittest person :)

Yoga Soc runs classes for all levels-from complete beginner to experienced yogis. Classes are run during the afternoons and evenings, depending on demand. We have professional yoga instructors in to teach classes, and they do a variety of types of yoga.

Yoga is a really good way to increase your flexibility and tone muscles, while not being competitive!

Last year, Yoga Society put on several events, such as free taster classes and movie and pizza nights.

Feel free to ask any questions!

    :) cheers

Veg Soc is fantastic (not saying that cause I'm friends with the founder :pac:). I'm not sure what the plan is now, but every week they did pot lucks, then there'd be bake sales for charity occasionally, talks from DSPCA and other groups, outings to restaurants, and film screenings. It was a great society when I went to it (I'm sure it still is) and I'd highly recommend joining (even if you're not Veggie/Vegan) :)

It's ok , possibly not the most active in the college , especially considering its a sports club. But they hold lessons regularly enough (about 2 a month) and they go to "tet" in November which is a triathlon between all the colleges and there's varsities in Feb/March which is just like a general competition between all the colleges in Ireland also. :)

As a committee member, I'm going to put in a shameless plug for NUIM Disney Society (Facebook).

We host numerous Disney themed events such as quizzes and movie nights, usually involving pizza. It's a friendly enough society where you can just chillax and watch a film after a hard days college.

We have previously collaborated with other societies such as Archery, Classics, Omega, Veggie Soc, American Football and several others.

Feel free to add us on Facebook *points up*
Or PM me if you've any other questions or event suggestions
    :D

Just to mention the Mature Student Society is undergoing some major but welcoming changes this year by the new committee (both 2nd and 3rd year students). The new bunker room is located over where the SU shop was so when term starts come say hi all are welcome. There will be lots more social events held this coming year (watch this space) and of course all are welcome. The Society will be a lot more active within the college than ever before. :)
The society will be present for the Mature Student orientation next week both Monday and Tuesday so give them a shout if you need help with anything, they can be spotted wearing blue t-shirts with the University logo and Mature Student Society printed on them. Finally, a meet and greet reception with tea/coffee and refreshments shall be held in the common room after orientation on Tuesday afternoon come over and say hi and meet some of the Mature Students both current, past and of course 1st years. :)

Anybody know if there is a Harry Potter society? I heard there was but can't find anything on it. Thanks

SnowSoc seem to have already planned their 2014 trip - does this mean that 1st years won't get a chance to go? Or have they still probably not fully booked it yet, and we can sign up in October?

There has not been an active Harry Potter Society in Maynooth in years, but if you are interested in setting it up again you can always contact the Vice president for Clubs and Societies at vpcsud@nuimsu.com.

I went to a few Comedy Soc events last year. They weren't very frequent, but I enjoyed the ones I did attend, which included a lecture-hall gig with a lineup of 4 moderately good comedians, and another one where Tommy Tiernan made an appearance for 50 minutes....on a projector :(

It's not the most sociable of societies. You don't sit around discussing your favourite comedy acts while sipping brie and eating red wine - it's more of an "event" society. Events are organised; you attend; then you leave. Maybe that depends on what you make of it, however, and I'm an anti-social buffoon.

All that said, maybe my recollection is fuzzy/skewed, or the society's style has changed since last year. It's worth going along to a meeting or two and seeing what you think of it. Costs nothing but time.

Anyone have any experience with the St V de P society that they'd like to share? I'm thinking of joining it this year.

I'm part of the Self Defence Club. Was president for a few years while in college, and now an alumni member, and black belt.

It's good fun, and you don't have to be fit, or strong, or anything else to join - just willing to give it a go. There are all different levels, and all different shapes and sizes that train (for instance, I'm a 5' 3", small-ish girl).

Like any sort of new sport, it'll maybe be a little tough at first, especially if you're not used to exercise, but don't let that put you off. It'll get easier as your fitness increases and hopefully that'll make you feel great too!

We seem to be having a few problems with our website at the moment, and it's due an update, but it is here: http://www.nuimselfdefence.com

We also have a Facebook page, so please join and ask any questions you may have, or keep up with what's happening: https://www.facebook.com/groups/nuimselfdefence/

We've got a youtube channel which we upload class videos to, so that people can review techniques: http://www.youtube.com/nuimselfdefence We also upload videos of seminars that our instructors have taught at. Don't be put off if the videos seem advanced - we definitely start at beginner level, and don't expect people to be throwing and flying around the place right at the start!

Feel free to PM me here, and I'll do my best to answer questions. Hope that helps!
