    Hi guys,

I've been hunting like a good thing for a ring. Vintage/Antique/traditional with just plain basic white gold band, no decorations with a relatively large rock. Budget it about 2500 mark

See attached a ring that I really like and I think she will like. Does anyone know where I could find such a ring?? I've been to 3 places so far and no luck

I'm surprised you had no luck in finding a ring like this!!

You should contact Seamus from Voltaire Diamonds on here, they can make any ring you like and will be able to tell you beforehand what size, cut, colour, clarity of diamond you can get for your budget.

We got my ring there and it's stunning. I get compliments on it everyday.

    Best of luck!

what the hell is a relatively large rock ???

seriously OP size means very little in terms of diamonds. Learn about the 3 C's a large stone with your budget isn't going to be a very good quality diamond.

plus going to three places doesn't really count as having hunted like a good thing ...

We got mine in Breretons on capel street, princess cut solitaire set in platinum

Great to deal with, brought rings in from his other shops for us to see, and reset the diamond I wanted into another band.

i second breretons, and also try weldons

i've bought from both, (not two engagement rings!!!!) and was pleased with both shops

That is a very standard style of engagement ring - I'd say 85% of women I know have a plain solataire on a white gold/platinum band. Most jewellers will stock something like that and the price will depend on the 4cs.

My ring is very similar to the one in your picture, I got it in Gears Jewellers in Parnell street (Tiffanys do them also)...I have seen plenty like them in the shops !!

Based on the "FOREVER" printed inside it, the one you posted is a H Samule's ring.
Not sure if you pulled the pic from their site or from somewhere else as an example of the style.

Have you tried them, they do these rings in a variety of sizes:

I'm going to propose soon to my girlfriend in NYC. I am wondering has anyone got recent experience or recommendiations on jewellers in NYC. I have seen good reviews of Haniken's but they are all old reviews. Any advise greatly appreciated!! Tiffany's seems to a bit too expensive and OTT to be honest. While we are add it, anyone recommend a good restaurant to do the deed!!;-)

    Thanks

Have a look in tiffanys, you could be surprised. We bought our ring there last year in the US.

If it was me... Avoid the restaurant, go for a walk down around Greenwich, Central Park or some nice quite setting.

You can find a lot of detailed info on Google. Basically though it's:
    1. Cut
    2. Clarity
    3. Carat
    4. Colour
I think acceptable standards as I gathered from jewellers when shopping ourselves:
    1. Clarity of VS or better, SI is ok
    2. Carat - depends on your budget, but once you go over 1ct it's pretty exponential
    3. Colour - H or better, D is best, I is ok.
    4. Cut - while there are many cut shapes (princess, round brilliant, etc...) basically a perfect and balanced cut will give you max shine. Don't think there's a standard for that though.
Some jewellers will also specify fluorescence. What is good or bad though depends on culture, I'm told high fluorescence is popular in Spain but not in Britain for example.
Those might be the high standards pushed by jewellers trying to make a more expensive sale, so it really depends on your own standards and budget at the end of the day.
