    Please can somebody help me!!
I am due to start BBS in DCU and have looked into the possible teaching outcome of this degree. Its says that I would be qualified to teach "the business studies", now does that mean accounting, economics AND business or just business.
I have already e-mailed DCU and they replayed by saying that I can teach "the business studies" too which did not clarify my query.
Can anyone doing this degree, finished it or just starting shed some light? :-)

This is the reference to teaching in the course outline on the DCU website: This course is also suitable for those who ultimately wish to pursue a career in teaching as it is recognised by the Teaching Council to teach the Business Studies.

Note that it does not say you would be qualified to teach at all. In order to teach you would have to do (what I understand will be a two-year course by the time you finish your degree) the PDE which is the Post-Primary teaching qualification required on top of your degree. You may well be aware of that but there are such things as concurrent teaching degrees where you take education as a subject and at the end you have a teaching qualification. Just so that you are not confusing the two.

The question of whether you would be qualified to teach Accounting and/or Economics would depend upon your specialisation on your degree or what you took as a 'major'. The Teaching Council is the arbiter of what you are qualified to teach. Beware of generic advice from Universities on such matters. In a sense they are giving you correct information in that you could certainly teach the generic 'business' subject but there is a reason they are not mentioning other subjects as they cannot predict the path you go on the course in terms of module choices. But you do not want to take a specialisation in a module that does not have sufficient credits or whatever to allow you to teach a subject. Unfortunately, the Teaching Council is notoriously difficult in dealing with abstract questions. You almost have to make the blunder first before they assess the qualification. It does seem unlikely that you would do a degree that enables you to teach all the business subjects but I am open to correction on that.

Also beware that Economic and Accounting are choice - and not exactly over-subscribed - subjects, which will have implications for employment and the level of employment (getting a 'job' as opposed to 'hours').

First of all congratulations for getting the place!

The Teaching Council does indeed recognise the DCU BBS as a qualification for the purpose of admission to the register of teachers. Below I have a link to their List of Degrees Recognised for Registration Purposes:

    http://www.teachingcouncil.ie/_fileupload/Registration/AutoQuals/Autoquals%20updated%2025%20April%202013.pdf

The DCU BBS is listed on page 49, for teaching Accounting, Business and Economics. Further details for each of these subjects is given on pages 35, 36 and 37.

My advice to you is, if you are meeting the head of your course, you could bring these pages to him and ask him to advise you on what modules/options would be best for you to take. You could also ask him if any graduates from the course have gone on to do second level teaching and if they have if he could put them in touch with you. You could also make an appointment with the Careers Service in DCU and ask their advice. Also get in touch with the Teaching Council directly atLoCall 1890 224 224 or +353 (0)1 651 7904postprimaryqa@teachingcouncil.ie
Also, if your Leaving Cert business teacher(s) are approachable, they might be able to put you in touch with someone that could advise you.

Also, regarding job prospects, there has been a huge rise in enrollments in primary schools this past few years, This year 71,000 junior infant pupils to enrolled, an increase of 15,000 over ten years ago. These children will be heading to second level by the time you are qualified, so I think the job prospects look good :)

The best of luck with it!
