I will be flying from Dublin to Durban via Dubai and want to take a 1/2 ltr bottle of Jameson as a gift. Will it be ok in the checked baggage or will there be a problem taking it that way. Thanks

    Not on the banned list.....

Passengers are not permitted to carry the following articles in their hold baggage:

Explosives and incendiary substances and devices – explosives and incendiary substances and devices capable of being used to cause serious injury or to pose a threat to the safety of aircraft, including:

    • Ammunition
    • Blasting caps
    • Detonators and fuses
    • Mines, grenades and other explosive military stores
    • Fireworks and other pyrotechnics
    • Smoke-generating canisters and smoke-generating cartridges
    • Dynamite, gunpowder and plastic explosives

The data above is from the file linked to below.....

No problem taking it but it's risky for other reasons:
    - Could get broken and ruin your suitcase
    - Your case could get rifled (which does happen quite a lot) and the bottle stolen.

Why not buy a bottle in the duty free? Seems the most straightforward and simplest solution.

Dubai duty free that it is.

No Dublin is where I meant. You would be certain of getting the brand of whiskey you want. As long as you keep your receipt and the sealed bag you can bring it onward to Durban.

OP is only talking about a 1/2 litre bottle which can be easily protected by t-shirts and other soft clothes in the middle of his bag and is unlikely to be damaged by rough treatment by the baggage handlers.

If he buys it in duty-free he will save very little and he'll have the hassle of lugging it around with him.

From past experience, and with a suitcase that still smells like Bailey's 7 years later as evidence, see if you can fit it into a big ziplock bag (with the air squished out and fully sealed), then stick it in the middle of the suitcase, surrounded by clothes.

    Good advice.
