I have an artic licence with a year and a half, I don't drive a truck for a living, I have no cpc modules done and I am wondering what will the story be if I wanted to go driving in 5 years time?

will I have 9 modules to catch up then, will it be more difficult, am I better off to apply now and catch up to date for the sake of it?

can I do the 5 to catch up between here and xmas,

if anyone could tell me my easiest option to this it would be greatly appreciated

Did you pass two CPC theory tests and practical CPC test during your driving test? (called as well CPC initial qualification)

I didn't do anything in relation with cpc's I was told I didn't have to if I wasn't driving for hire or reward, also told if I was going drive for private company and they were hauling there own goods that I wouldn't need it either

    That's true.
also told if I was going drive for private company and they were hauling there own goods that I wouldn't need it either
    Very unlikely.
If you are going to work for that company as a driver, you will need CPC, no matter whose goods their haul.
Only exception would be if you were a field worker, and carried equipment necessary for your work to your work place in a truck.
F.e. if you are a plumber and use a truck for carrying your tools and pipes, but your main profession is plumbing, then you don't need CPC.
    Otherwise you do need it.

Considering you didn't get it in the first place, to be able to work as a driver, you need to do initial qualification in the first place. (so 2 CPC theory tests, and CPC practical test).
Once you do that, you will be able to drive for living, and from then, you will need to do one day training every year.

You apply for two theory tests in here: http://www.theorytest.ie/english/cpc/

And for practical CPC test, you book in the same place as you booked your driving test.
You will need a truck for that, so if you don't have access to one, you might need to rent it from driving school like for driving test.

cpc.ie crowd does annual cpc training, and have nothing to do with initial qualification. You will only be doing those annual training modules, once you go through annual qualification.

All info you need is here: http://www.rsa.ie/RSA/Learner-Drivers/The-Driving-Test/Apply-online/
do you no what happens if I don't do it, am I better off doing it

If you don't do it, then you won't be legally allowed to work as a driver.
If you are caught working/driving without it, you might get a fine of 2000euro and your employer up to 5000euro, for which reason it's very unlikely anyone would employ you without CPC.

do I need to do a theory or can I go straight into module 1 if that is what it is called

I rang a couple if different crowds running the courses and they all have told me different stories on what I must do, one of them said that the rsa hardly know whats happening themselves and the whole thing is up in heap.

I heard that france Germany had these cpc's too and they are after scrapping the whole thing now and you dont need them any more?

As I said everything above - modules are to be done only by people who already hold CPC qualification. Those modules are to maintain this qualificiation. You don't have this qualificiation at all, so you need to get it first by doing 2 theory tests + practical test. There's no way around it.
I rang a couple if different crowds running the courses and they all have told me different stories on what I must do,
Because many crowds doing CPC courses have no clue what's it about, and some of them are totally not reliable. I got bitten once as well by incompetency of CPC courses crowd.
one of them said that the rsa hardly know whats happening themselves and the whole thing is up in heap.
There might be few issues where even RSA might not be sure, but your case is really striaght forward. You don't have CPC and you need to get it before you can start driving for living, by doing 2 theory tests and practical test.

    That bullsh1t.
CPC rules apply all over EU, and no country is allowed to scrap it.
