    Hi,

I am hoping I can get some advice here about the Essix Retainer.
I've recently been given one by my orthodontist which I have to wear night and day for 6 months.
I have read different accounts of what is best practice to care for these, so I was hoping I could get a close to definitive account from boards!!

What method is best for cleaning the Essix Retainer, I have seen water and vingear solution mentioned as well as Steradent.

Has anyone any suggestion about drinking alcohol while wearing the retainer, does this make it considerbly harded to clean and maintain the retainer. Are certain non-alcohol drinks to be avoided as well?

Finally, has anyone had issues with metal fillings leaving a dark/brown mark on the retainer when you put it into your mouth?

    I'd really appreciate some feedback.
    Thanks a million!!

I use steradent (as recommended by my ortho) and it works fine. Cheap enough too.

I was told to only drink milk and water with the retainer in. And to take it out for everything else. I'd say alcohol etc would effect the material and stain it..so
therefore wouldn't be clear anymore! Tbh I don't think taking it out for a few hours whilst having a few drinks will make your teeth move. Best ask you Ortho though! Or even the nurse in the office.

    No.

Thanks for replying and your advice.

I bought the steradent today so I will give that a test on the Essix Retainer.

I'm a bit worried about the alcohol, spoke to someone at the dental practice (not the ortho) and they said drinking alcohol was fine, however I read a lot on online dental forms, guides that advise against this!!

Hopefull the steradent gets rid of the dark colouring that appears when I put it on, pretty sure it's from my metal filling.
