Handing out CVs to schools

    Hi,
I'm a newly qualified teacher but I don't have a job for September or beyond. So, I have been visiting schools all this week handing out CVs for possible subbing in Dublin city centre.

I haven't met many principals as they are busy understandably which means I've had to hand my paperwork over to the secretary and today the caretaker (he swooped it out of my hand before I knew it!)

    Is this futile?
Should I just leave the school and come back another time to give it to the principal in person? Or is there any hope of my CV crossing their paths?

    What are your thoughts?

    Thanks

I'm in the same situation simonsays! Fair play to you for being out so early, I was planning to leave it to late next week when schools were settled back a bit! What sort of response did you get? Do you forsee much work?

Well, I reckon, you're almost better off. I visited numerous schools which took an age to find at times, only to find them closed or no secretary, no principal.

I met only 4 principals this week but they have been very positive I must say.
I visited 3 schools today- 2 closed and 1 with the caretaker episode so I had a rethink in a coffee shop instead! The newspaper naturally distracted me of course and that was the end of my productive day!

I just want to get my strategy right if you know what I mean.....But I reckon you've the right idea too...

It's hard to say really (except being in the right place at the right time! if only)

Hard to know! I'm lucky enough to drive so I plan to post CVs to places within a 30-40 min radius and pop in personally to local schools.

A few friends have got sorted with placements until Christmas recently, fingers crossed we'll get in somewhere!

I had great luck in a few schools last year, especially in 2 where I met the principal and the secretary. It can be an advantage to go in looking well, introduce yourself and give a good first impression. It made up for the weaknesses in my CV, in my case! They'll be flooded with CVs from new graduates so a personal touch can help.

I used to do this back in the day and I found that I got more work through giving my name to the INTO branch secretary. In these more modern times, register with text a sub.

Well, I cannot sign up to text-a-sub until I have a teaching council number.
My application is been processed but will be many weeks I believe.
I will research INTO suggestion though, thanks

Business cards might be a good idea too-and cheaper than cvs, our principal has them on her noticeboard beside her phone. Cvs can go in drawers and get forgotten.

Super! Well done! Are you Monaghan or Dublin based?
