Um, you got taxed, like everyone else working.

    Are you on emergency tax?

You have 388 gross and 89 deductions leaving you with 299. You have to pay tax, usc and prsi. Did you never pay these before? What tax credits are you getting on your payslip?

    Welcome to the working world.

Hence why so many never leave the dole! Cheaper not to work!

You can go online and check your tax status if your registered for it or call the tax office.

If you only have your first tax paying job you should have a lot of tax credits left for the year. In other words tax free. I would think you haven't given them your tax details properly. That means you get emergency taxed if you don't sort it out, which means it will go up!

I suspect that is emergency calculations you have.

OP, your tax credits seems to be wrong. Did you claim for flat rate expenses (which everyone is entitled to). By way of comparison, my sister has the standard tax credits for a single person. Her gross is nearly €500 and she only pays €35 tax, 22 in USC and €15 in PRSI. So much less than you, even though you're earning less. So you need to get this sorted pronto.

Ring the tax office tomorrow with your employers number from your payslip and they will send a statement of credits to you and your employer.

once the letter arrives at your house get on to your payroll dept and tell them you want your emergency tax sorted out please.

It should take 3 Weeks max, you will then get any over payment back in your pay.

If its not sorted by Christmas, you'll have to wait till you get a p60.

They really should teach this stuff in school, I've had staff threaten to leave over their tax affairs.

And did you sort out your P45 so that you or your new employer could properly register you for tax?

You're being taxed ~45, which plus a €32 tax credit because you're only in your first 4 weeks, gives you a tax of 20% = emergency tax. Your USC is 7%, which is also an emergency tax rate. http://www.revenue.ie/en/tax/it/leaflets/emergency-rates-2012-2013.pdf

It does come across like maybe your part time job wasn't fully above board, if this isn't something you've dealt with before or if you don't have a P45.

Your Gross figure looks right for 38 Hrs worked.

Rough calculation €20,890/260/8 = €10.04 per hour, which would be close to what you got for your 38 Hrs.

It looks like you're being taxed under emergency tax. It's up to you to correct this with Revenue.

Ring Revenue and get them to transfer your tax credits and bands to your new company. You'll need to give them your new company's tax reg number. Get this of your company's accounts dept.

By the way, if you don't fix this it'll progressively get worse

Yeah like other posters have said you need to ring revenue OP.

With your tax corrected you should be on about 335 - 340 euro after tax, which isn't too bad.

    Thanks again guys:):)

Yes I received a payslip:) and I was working earlier this year too ( part time)

I sorted out my p45, I only had page 2 of it!! And I rang revenue last Friday and they said they would pass on my details to my current employer!!i also gave revenue the registration number of my current work place!! But I don't know what's going on

Realistically, what should really be deducted from my wages each week, as in how much?

Did Revenue know that you have a P45 from your earlier job this year? It's important to let them know when you finish a job too.

Depending on your new employer's payroll system, this may take a few weeks to sort out. (The really big one get sorted quickly, the really small ones are so simple that they tend to get sorted too ... but some medium ones can take a few weeks to catch up with things.)

But you will get the overpayment back.

No need to freak out as whats due will all come back to you once your credits are sorted out. Ask your current wages office what did the do with the P45 you gave them. If there were tax credits already on that form, then it should be just a matter of implementing it.

If you have given in your P45, then it should be sorted out with in a few weeks.

You can still call the tax office and get a copy of your tax credits, it would be no harm.

Other than that just remind payroll that you are still on emergency tax if its not sorted out next week.

Based on my experience, you should be getting €402 per week, Less USC @€;15
    Less PRSI @€;16
    Less tax @ €17
This would give you €354 per week, net.

You may pay less 'tax' as you have been out of work for a few months.

I was only out of work for 2 months and 2 weeks though!! I hate complaining to the HR department but it has to be done I suppose! I'm scared incase they won't be able to fix it for me:(:( I just really need all the money I can't get at the moment as I have a few bills coming in and soon they will all pile up:(

It's just annoying coz the page I gave them with the p45 I don't think had details of credits on it! But the woman in revenue said the employer would be able to get that off them! I was very diligent about having the registration number of my new work place to revenue, in the hope of this happening and look what happens to me:(

I will get on to revenue tomorrow and let ye know what the story is!! Thanks so much for the replies!! Ye are a lovely bunch x

The fastest way I've found to sort out my emergency tax is as follows -

    1. Ring Revenue.

An automated voice will tell you to call out your PPS number. If you do this, they will state that they'll post letters to you to sort your tax credits.

    2. Do not state your PPS number. Say 'blah blah blah' into the phone. They'll ask you to try again. After about 20 tries, they'll put you through to a real person.

    3. Real person will ask you for your PPS, your employer's number (on your payslip) and when you started working there. It'll then be sorted over the phone, and your money will be refunded in your wages within about 2 weeks.

I did it this way, and got my money refunded within a week and a half. My sister actually stated her PPS to the automated voice and is still waiting for her letter, 3 weeks later.

    within about 2 weeks.

No guarantees re the number of weeks, it depends a little on the nature of the new employer's payroll and how often changes are done to payments that have been set up.

But the OP will get refunded eventually, usually within a few weeks.
