    looking at turbos to be ready for winter.saw one in halfords, elite trainer, which looked sturdy for 190. have seen a few on amazon and ebay for under 100 . has anyone any experience of these cheaper ones.
    i dont have a clue about turbos but was talking to a frien who said there is no need for a second wheel. he said he uses some sort of bontager winter tyre that he uses on both trainer and road and lasted for last two years.
    does this sound ok

    assume you mean this one

    Thats not bad, elite are a good brand.

    You will need a second tyre for most turbos, some with a gel on the roller are fine without (higher end elites)

    If you use a normal tyre on a turbo it won't last long.
    If you use a trainer tyre on the road you will crash and die.

    Cheaper than 100 euro == sh1t turbo

    I use a gatorskin(training wheel) and it doesn't wear out much at all.

    Before that I had used my race wheel which has a GP4000s and it was wearing out pretty fast.

    Cheap turbo trainers will do the job. If you plan to use one a lot and have a plan for the winter to really improve your bike strenght then you are better investing in a decent one that has a good roll down time, so it will carry the momentum with a big flywheel so you kind of get the coasting effect you get on the road. Kinetic make really nice turbo trainers, I use the Tacx Flow(couldnt get a Kinetic at the time) myself and its grand though quiet expensive.

    I did the same thing with a Gatorskin on an Elite and it wore a flat area on the top of the tyre.

    The turbo tyres are much, much quieter. All the better to hear your suffering!!

    If I get a second wheel would I have to get the exact same sprocket . How much would u be talking for spare wheel. I like tunneys optimism about cycling out doors with a trainer tyre haha. my friend didnt use a turbo tyre he just used a winter tyre dont know the type will try and findout and then post.

    The gel roller on the elites are superb- no need for swapping wheels and you can take the bike between turbo and road as you like. Might be worth your while spending an extra €40 for an elite with a gel roller rather than investing in another tyre and wheel.

    +1 for the elite gel turbos. I have a Elite Crono Fluid ElastoGel a few years now and I'm still using the same gp4000 tyre since day one and its much quieter than most.

    I read the reviews on wiggle and most said it was great but a couple said that the resistance was high and could be quite difficult for the beginner. Any thoughts.

    You'll be fine. Easy gear=easy resistance. You'll certainly be able to spin away in an easy gear.

    Thanks I think although ill probably curse you after first session I believe they are torture
