Bonded Retainers/Wires

I have had bonded retainers/wires on the backs of my teeth for at six years now and recently (probably due to the sudden emergence of wisdom teeth causing pressure) several parts of them snapped.

I am facing 75 euro just to have a chat with my orthodontist about it because I haven't been a part of his clinic for so long, the secretary claims that to actually do something with the wires, either fix or remove them, there will be further charges.

Is anywhere in Dublin repairing bonded retainers for cheaper than this 75 euro-consultation only cost?

Does the Medical Card cover repair of braces?

Thanks for any help as this seems like a lot of money!

If you have been away for 6 years, then you are nearly a new patient again and need to be assessed, €75 seems fair.

Further charges for a wire fix or replace is fair enough too. Why would it be free?

Medical card would cover none of this.

New cars come with a 3 year warranty if your lucky, your orthodontist doesnt own your teeth and dental problems forever. 75 euro is very reasonable for the work involved.

Alright thanks for the responses :) Just feel a little hard done by because it's only a little problem with a tiny wire so felt like a lot of money to fix it!

That problem will take 30-45 minutes to redo properly. That 30-45 minutes of the orthodontists time, the nurses time, the receptionists time, rent, rates, electricity, materials, sterilised equipment, insurance etc take any profit and give 55% to the revenue and thats what the orthodontist will make, not a big money maker. Also if it brakes again in the next few years the orthodontist will have to fix it for free, so that has to factored in to his fee now.

I would have though it would be double that or more.

It's 75 euro for the consultation only, not the actual mending of the braces. I pay him the 75 euro to decide what to do with them (either fix/remove/re-shape) and then I come back another time and pay another fee to have the work actually done.
