Are tow bars model specific?

Just wondering about two bars- I have one on my MG ZR which I got fitted by Mr.Bullbar about a year ago, it was around €400 all up. If it is possible I'd be keen to take it off and transfer it to the car I buy later but am unsure if they are model specific or not ? Would a good mechanic be able to make a towbar fit any model using the right tools ?

    Yes they are model specific.

So is there no transferability at all ? Would a mechanic be able to weld a few holes for it to fit a different car or is it a bit more complex than that. Sorry for the questions but if I let this go I'll have to stump up another €400 for a towbar on the car I buy so if it is worth my while taking it off the current car I will.

Very, very little transferability....unless diiferent car makes share the same floorpan (eg. Volvo V40 and Mitsubishi Carisma, from the '90's).
Worth having a look on Adverts for a 2nd hand bar, or else there are a few sellers on Ebay (Towequipe are just one) who are usually 1/2 the price of what you would pay here.
Obviously you would need someone to fit it but it should work out a lot cheaper than doing the whole deal here.
What car are you buying ?
Have a look here for the particular model and you will find the fitting instructions.

If it does not involve Bumper removal then the fitting cost should be reasonable enough.
Just make sure the fitter uses a relay pack when wiring in the Towbar to avoid any problems with the car's onboard computer.......

thanks for that, looks like I will just have to sell it with the tow bar on as it is going to be little use otherwise. I'm not sure what car I'm going to get yet, its a toss up between a Hyundai Coupe and BMW 3 series but either way I'd doubt either of those would have compatibility with an MG.
Will go down the online route to try to get a 2nd hand one when I do need it, I've been using partsgateway.co.uk for parts for the MG for a couple of years now and find them excellent.
