Can I tax this?

Sick of being ripped off for automatic car hire I have bought a car in Dublin. The car has no tax and I want to tax it before I return to Ireland as I want to drive it down to Wexford when I arrive in October.

The reg cert will be sent to my Wexford address. Can my son tax the car in Dublin somehow? I know a visit to the tax office is required (or by post). Is the reg cert required to tax it?

The car has NCT and will be insured.

    Any help gratefully received.

    Thanks.

It has been said on here before that even with the first tax if you go onto the Motor Tax website and request a new PIN one will be sent to you and you can tax it online. Not sure how true that is but I suppose its worth a try as it would save your son a trip to Wexford!

Tried that. It said that the car can't be taxed online.

It's true.. On both of the A6's I was able to request a PIN and tax it online on the Motor tax site as soon as the ownership transferred over on the system. Didn't have to go near a tax office :)

If it is saying it can't be done online that is probably cos the details you are supplying as a owner are not the same as what is currently registered against the vehicle.

Have you checked Vehicle Transaction Enquiry first and see if the ownership was changed?

Once you know they have your details as the owner you could try the online pin retrieval again and it should work. However remember that your tax disk will be sent to your Wexford address.

I've tried everything to get the PIN on the system. The ownership has been changed and the new cert issued. This is what it says when I put the info into the form: "This vehicle is not eligible for online taxing. Please contact your local motor tax office."

I think I'm stuffed. I'll just have to run the gauntlet from Dublin to Wexford and tax it when I get there.

Maybe they don't want my money. :D

I was just thinking... Maybe it's an IP thing. I'm trying to do it from Spain. Are they that fussy in the tax office?

Ring the DOE in Shannon and check if it's in your name. If it is they'll give you the PIN. If it's confirmed in your name but there's another reason it can't be taxed online, your son can tax it in any Dublin Motor Tax Office as long as he has the correct registration details (doesn't need the cert, just be able to give the correct registration details) and has a Dublin address, the car doesn't have to be registered to a Dublin address (it's amazing how they facilitate such things when there's cash in it for them).

Edit... when did you buy the car? You can only tax it online up to the end of the month after the tax expires, could this be the problem?

I only bought the car last week. God knows when it was last taxed. There was no disc, maybe that is the problem after all. I'll ask my son to give it a go in Dublin.

Your tax will have to be processed by Wexford Co Council and Dublin Co Co will not do anything.

Your son can submit This Form to Wexford motor tax office.

Not true, there are notices up in the Dublin Tax Offices stating they will Tax cars registered elsewhere so long as you can provide a Dublin address.

Why can't you tax your car in any tax office??

The money is all going to the same bloody back pocket!
