Pricey crash repairs

    Hi All

I returned from holiday last weekend to find that someone had hit the side of my car leaving a deep scrape and smashing the tail light along some some other bits of damage.

Luckily this person had left their phone number which I was quite surprised at.

I spoke to the person who did it and agreed to get a quote on repairs and would send it on.

I got the quote today and it's a bit pricey; to replace the panel, tail light and repair the other other parts the cost is around 2.5k. Labour is the main cost.

This is very expensive, especially since the car is only worth around twice this.

Am I within my rights legally and also morally to ask for this amount?

    Thanks in advance.

    Bw

If it was me, I'd get a few quotes from decent, reputable places where you would be happy to send your car. Then I'd send them all to the person in question. At the end of the day, they can either pay out of their own pocket or claim off their insurance. At least by giving them a few quotes its obvious your not trying to pull a fast one and being overtly realistic of the cost. Either way, you have the final say as to where your car goes if they want to deal with it privately.

Yes, your car was damaged through no fault of your own, they have insurance, that's what its for.

Or they can settle out of their own pocket.

The make of the car doesn't matter, Id rather not give out details.

    Thanks.

Its a bit hard to decide if a quote is good or bad without knowing the car. a rear light alone for two different models could be hundreds of a difference.

Same thing happened my Sister only the person didn't leave a number. And it was parked in her parking space at home.

I told her to get cash quotes which she did and it was less than half what it would have cost through the insurance.

This is what has insurance premiums so high, because the insurance companies are being ripped off.

Worst think is it happened again same side of car at her work place this time a few weeks later, honestly you would want a cam inside your car 24x7 these days.

Right, Im only asking because the car and age would depend on what route I went, if he is prepared to pay cash, you could even pocket a few hundred for yourself...

Why would you do that is he/she is honest enough to admit to the damage ?

Honesty of that nature is extremely rare and should be appreciated not abused.

I am being honest! I can shop around, get a few cash quotes, and knock off a few extra quid for the person that has caused the damage!!! A broken light can be purchased on ebay or scrap yard for a fraction of what a new one will cost through insurance, I also know a guy who is excellent who charges a fraction for repairs compared to doing it through insurance...

The difference in cosmetic repair for similar damage to a 100k car and a 1k car wont be far off!

It isn't being honest if you can pocket a few hundred at someone else's expense.

That's as bad as damaging someone's car and driving off. It's dishonest.

Jesus why can't you just appreciate genuine extremely rare honesty ? the fact the person could have just walked away ?

I bet my sister would have been glad to save 700 Euro's if someone had to come forward, and then for it to happen again a few weeks after she got it repaired, just unbelievable. She wouldn't even be thinking of making a few quid for herself.

yes the person was being honest, doing the RIGHT thing, not the wrong one. You dont think its bloody inconvenience having to shop around get prices, possibly be without the car etc, dealing with the guilty party, potential insurance etc? The person might have to go through insurance, so the argument could be mute. You arent misleading anyone, you can say look, we can go through insurance, or if paying cash, I can do the two of us a favor...

Yes it is inconvenient, but imagine the inconvenience if you had to pay for it yourself ?

I think that person deserves praise because they sound to me like someone that has some sort of morals which are disappearing in this world. maybe their children might grow up with some morals too.

I'm not getting on my high horse but I'd like to think I would be honest enough too. I don't think I could do damage to someone's property and run.

You just can't be serious to say that if you pocket a few hundred that it isn't misleading ?

Did you ever hear the saying what goes around comes around ?

I know what your saying but I didn't ask if the quote was good or bad, I think the quote is fair for the work that has to be done.

    Wrong wrong wrong!

This person was honest enough to leave a number and the damage was accidental.

This is the type of attitude that has this country fecked and in the condition it is in.

    Shame on you.
