arthurs day 2013 waterford

so its that time of the year again where the made up holiday returns to advertise one brand of alcohol that is Guinness. I've always hated this day but i do go out and "celebrate" anyway. fair play to Guinness though. they do pay a lot of money by bringing in bands worldwide(yes its not just Ireland and its a two day, day this year apparently) and all of the profit they make that day goes to some initiative enterprise thing they have set up. now i know that its just a marketing campaign but i dont see coca cola giving the christmas profits to an enterprise group...............

but that's all beside the point.

so its on the 26th and 27th of September

the main cities being Limerick Dublin Cork Galway and Belfast where they will have the bigger acts. but like every other year they will also have acts in other towns villages and random bars throughout ireland.

so does anyone know of any bands that are rumoured for waterford?? anyone hear of anything happening that didnt sound true but now might make sense because of this new information??

I'm nearly certain I read after last year that it was the worst night and busiest night of the year for dublin fire brigade guards and ambulance a+e. Like this country needs an excuse to drink.

I agree with the monkey too much drinking in this country should be a natural spring water day or something !!!

    Define drink responsibly?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,175 ✭✭✭Paulegend

    Define drink responsibly?

    - go out to a bar
    - listen to music or some other sort of bar entertainment
    - have as many drinks as you feel you want
    - have banter and chats with your friends
    - dont ruin other peoples nights. just because you find it funny doesnt mean its not harrasing someone that isnt in on the banter
    - when its closing time go get food
    - then go home

    that is drinking responsibly

i started drinking during the celtic tiger years so im use to going out and having a laugh to me isnt getting in a fight or getting as drunk as possible as quick as possible so i can vomit everywhere like a dog marking their territory

im sure youll agree with what im saying which makes it sad that not everyone follows the same sort of guidelines.

all im saying is. just because drink is involved doesnt mean that its satan at work. hell jesus drank wine and so do priests at every mass.

All that aside, it's one of the most shameless marketing ideas I've ever encountered. One year would have been acceptable but trying to make it a yearly thing is stretching it. A lot.

oh its completly shameless and i hate the premise of it

but when you think about it closely is it any different to valentines day by hallmark or easter by cholcolate manufactures or even christmas by coca cola

granted the latter two where holidays that where hitched onto by big companies. but valentines day is a day that noone would ever suggest getting rid of and its only a day that hallmark makes money. there are hostorical facts about the day involving a saint but do we go to mass on valentines day or celebrate it with greeting cards??

my point is that yes its a marketing ploy and a very clever one. but at least they have footed the bill to bring live music throughout the world(not just in ireland) for that one day and its cool that there are big bands playing in small bars

im not going to buy any diageo products on the day im sticking to either my the craft beers or heineken but thats just my preference anyway. so im going to be out but just for the music and the few pints with mates.

i just hope there is actually going to be a couple of bigish bands in town

texas where in limerick last year. not a huge fan but i did like a few of there stuff when i was younger so woulda went to them. plus your one is hot:D

I don't think that is the message they want to deliver about the drink responsibly campaign. The whole idea is consumption and how much, thats the definition of drinking responsibly, what your intake per hour and how it affects your behaviour and your health.

I also love the way other posters constantly shaddow my posts doesnt join in in a conversation and gives a thumbs up anytime anybody argues a point with me, very childish I must say.

yea that link basically says that tehre was an increase based on a normalk thursday night which is obvious. it also says that it was just like a saturday night. when munster play in the latter stages of the heineken cup the nights are alot busier in limerick also but does that mean they shouldnt play as it would involve people drinking??

what does it matter how much i drink?? i keep to myself and have fun with my friends. how much do you drink??

i personally believe everyone is responsible for themselves and if one person wants to get a tattoo or have an abortion or drink alot then its up to them as long as it doesnt affect others.

your wrong about what drink responsible means.

Diagio make Guinness , its a Guinness marketing ploy. 1+1=...

Guinness sacked me I cant pay my mortgage cos ive lost my job yet I still go out and support a company that sacked me? Thats just something I cant understand, one person cant make a difference? No but its the principle. If you cant stop drinking alcohol then (and thats another issue) support local craft beers that keep local people in work.

I remember years ago ireland tried to get people to make a difference with the tv and radio ad campaigns with the guaranteed irish and buy irish campaign, I suppose this was all pointless and didn't make a difference.

This is all just a marketing ploy as the previous poster said.

of course i agree i am not a guiness drinker anyway

as i said ill be drinking my local craft stuff or else the dutch water that is heineken.

it is a marketing campaign of course it is but none of the profits of the day go to guinness. in fact they go to start up business through enterprise schemes. while im sorry to hear that you lost your job with them the unfortunate thing is many business's are struggling and while guinness as a whole will not struggle the factory itself was a loss maker. there was no use in the factory with high employment rates and the unnecessary need for the plant to be situated there. it sucks mate and i feel for you. i lost my job because of dell closing for the exact reason.

but what guinness are doing is a good thing. they unlike other companies are exploiting a big marketing opportunity but are also investing in enterprise which means more jobs down the road. it might mean little to you or me right now but 10 years down the road a small company now will grow to a bigger company and will employ many locals such as eistech. while im not sure where they got their capital i can assure you that is what these enterprise schemes are all about

but thats the moral side out of the way

its not about drinking. its about the fact that something is coming to waterford that is entertaining. exactly like daytrippers it may be a marketing campaign(you dont think that was marketing anything??? beat?? birthday?? ring a bell??) there is live music going to be on and thats what im on about thats all im on about.

just because you have a problem with drink doesnt mean everyone else does

I agree with alot of what your saying paullegend and I'm not having a go at you.

I don't have a drink problem ireland does, a severe alcohol problem and things like this don't help. There will be no doubt people who don't like my opinion and there will be posters who don't like me or my posts and will just disagree for arguments sake but I'm entitled to my opinion based on facts articles, publushings and personal experiences, just because I make a spelling mistake on a touch screen android doesnt make my points less valid, this is due android and touch screen something I don't like compared to a good old fashioned laptop keyboard but some other posters like to seize on this as some kind of weakness to an arguement.

That link I posted showed that there was at least a 30% increase in activity for the emergency services last arthurs day and the people on that emergency services board said that this was no doubt down to arthurs day. I'm not trying to stop people from having fun its just if you don't drink in ireland people think your a recovering alcoholic or your on anti biotics or they offer you drink or try persuade you to have drink as the night goes on. If theres a woman in the group they ask her if shes pregnant if shes not drinking.

Your disdain for the Irish people and their drinking habits have again derailed a thread that asked for information on the OP's quest for info for live bands playing in the City.

On your point of people trying to persuade you into having a drink or questioning if you are an alcoholic or pregnant if you decline, in my experience, utter bullsh!t. I don't drink and in all the years that I have visited Ireland and lived there not once has anyone even questioned me or badgered me into having a drink when I'm out. I'll stick my neck out here and say that 99% of the population would not/or have never even contemplated forcing drink on a non drinker. Total Crap.

As for criticising Grammar Nazis, didn't you point out a mistake in a poem posted yesterday ?

The Irish people are not hell bent on drinking excessively, robbing garages or forcing alcohol on unwilling participants.

I'm sorry that you lost your job with Guinness, but don't let your bitterness tarnish the nation as a whole.

Now, please, does anyone, anyone have any information about live bands playing in the city with all profits going to a worthwhile cause ?

Firstly I don't have to justify anything to you. You also seem to have a bee in your bonnet ever since I ridiculed you over your tesco petrol conspiracy theory that they were selling bad fuel, something that is not only libelous but totally crap. I was only in with volkswagen waterford and they recommended tesco petrol and told me what garages to avoid.

I dislike arthurs day for personal reasons and experiences due to my work, I simply pointed out that I read last year emergency services said that it directly led to them being upto 30% busier than usual accross the board I never said it was worse than paddy's day etc, I was then drawn into the debate further. Please refrain from the ACCUSATION that I have disdain for irish people, I won't have it. You probably wouldnt have people queuing upto buy you drink even if you did drink, and shock horror people in life have had different experiences.

On the spelling thing, you love to ghost threads and not join in but stick a little thumbs up when someone tries to dismiss my arguement due to a typing error. There was another serious attack in waterford over the weekend, I'm sure they were both sober.

no your ok you where just giving your opinion and your well entitled to it mate. i completly understand where your coming from. i dont fully agree but i dont need to agree for it to be valid. the thread just went sideways anyway and i guess its because nobody knows what will be on band wise arthurs day and thats the answer to the question. but dont worry mate no blame being pointed anywhere

No Big Bands are playing Waterford this year. Cork Galway Limerick all have them. They whole festival has been massively scaled back. There is only six major Venues in Dublin, for previous years there was up to 12.

The greatest marketing ploy since St. Patrick drove the snakes out of Ireland. No doubt that its crazy that a country with such a relationship with alcohol has just adopted this day and its now so popular (mostly in the main cities).

People may knock it but the idea of how we treat it is what makes this country great in my opinion. Always keen to have a good time and put a positive spin on things. Yeah lots of people prefer to stand back to judge and moan but personally I prefer to join the masses. Enjoy yourselves, this is no dress rehearsal.
