Taxing a car I bought that's out of tax since January?

How do I go about this?

I bought the car today (28-Aug), tax ran out Jan (do not have the old tax disc), i should get the log book in a day or two i think.

With the new rules do i have to get on to the tax office and declare the car will be off the road until i get the log book.

When i get the logbook do i bring it to the motor tax office and pay from the date I bought car (or can u do this online), do i have pay for the hole of Aug?

You're liable from when you bought the car, so technically for the month of August onwards.
You're not liable for anything before August 1st.
You can retrospectively declare the car off the road for August in September (provided you haven't had the car in a public place any time in August like)

You're liable for the tax since August 1st.

Well, unless it's off the road til September...

    That's why I said "technically"

One could assume he drove it home today.

I think you can leave it off the road for a few more days, until 1st September, so that you don't have to pay for August.

Claim it off the road until September 1st and pay from that date. You need to fill in the RF100A form (https://www.motortax.ie/OMT/pdf/RF100A_en.pdf) witnessed by Garda and bring that into the tax office with you.

No you don't have to pay anything for the whole of august, that's not you're problem. Just tax the car when you get the logbook and you're tax will start from the 1st day of september.

EDIT: you just bought the car so you have to go to the tax office this first time, but you can pay online in the future as they will e-mail you a pin number to use on their motor tax website, but you have to go in to the tax office this first time.

And bring logbook in with you and all other relevant information.

If ownership transfers over to the OP before 1st September then he/she is liable for tax for the whole month of August.

I bought my last car on the 30th October, and for once being a law abiding citizen, I went in mid november with the VLC to tax it.

The woman behind the counter in the tax office URGED me to shoot up the road to the cop shop and declare it off road for October, and was gobsmacked when I declined.

I was gobsmacked at her :D

Are you 100% sure of this ?

It's only a few days till 1st september so leaving the car in the driveway till the 1st sept and then going in to tax it, the tax start date should be from the 1st september. Well this was the case when i bought a car 6 days before the start of the month and my tax started at the first new month.

If Shannon receive the old log book with the change of ownership section filled in and dated August before the end of the month then they will put down the transfer of ownership as being August. If the car is not used until 1st September then the owner can get it declared off the road for the month of August.

Just to be clear, when you're signing it off for August, you're saying you didn't use it in a public place or consent others to do so.

    That's what it is.

What you do with that is up to you, but as long as you understand, strictly speaking you should be taxing it for August.
I wouldn't say a lot of people would give it a second thought and would just tax it from September 1.

So what you should do is tax it for August
What you could do is tax it from September (not that anyone would be encouraging you to make a false declaration)

I thought the rf100 form were the gards sign to confirm car off road was finished with with this new system?

I bought a car on the 8th August and never got the new log book until the 22nd aug and I then send rf150 form to tax office to say car off road...did i do this wrong? Havent had any word from tax office yet

    I see.

I never thought anything about having my car taxed for the previous month when i bought it, because, why do so if there is only 6 or less day's left at the end of the month and why would a person want to pay for a months tax when they only purchased the car say, 4 day's previous.

Obviously both sides of this scenario is open to philosophy.

    Hi All,

Thanks for all the replays, so just to get it straight, when I get the log book I would go online and d get it taxed and say date of purchase/ownship change was 1st September, or 28-Aug?

With the new rules would I need to say to the tax office that the car is off the road now until 1 st September. Like is there a way they could find out I bought it in Aug and should have taxed it for the hole Mt of Aug. like it is only a 1.2 Volkswagen polo so I think the tax for the year is like €180 or something, like the government is not going to care about that little money as they are bleeding money all over the place

You will be liable to pay the tax for the month it transfers ownership onwards..

    - So if the transfer happens on 28/8 = you pay for all of August
    - If the transfer date is 1/9 = you pay from September

So, either park it up and declare it off the road till Sunday/Monday (form required to be stamped by Garda) or not buy it until 1st September

Believe me though they will care.. it's because they're bleeding money (or just giving it away to private/outside interests) that we all have to pay more -including ridiculous tax rates for our cars :(
    (but that's another thread entirely)

You can't go online to tax the car unless they gave you a pin number to use for online payment. As far as i know, you have to go to the tax office and pay it there, after that if they have you're e-mail address then they will send you a tax reminder with a pin code on the next tax date.

    @ Kaiser2000

That's just crazy imo. Having to pay the full month when you haven't had the car the full month, only the last 4 day's of the month.

You can. Once the ownership has been transferred and registered on their system (check the vehicle transaction history), you can then request a PIN to be sent by email to you and tax it online from there.

Did it with (both) A6's in the last 2 months.

I completely agree! I'd also prefer if you could tax it monthly but that's equally unlikely to happen :(

Ah i see. Ye learn something new every day, that is one thing i never done, as when i rang the tax office they said that i would have to go to the motor tax office and pay it there only for that time and then i could do it online with a pin on the next payment.

    Thanks for clarifying this.

Is the "Garda stamp" rule not ending on the 31st of August, from the 1st of September the OP cant go in and declare it off the road for the previous month.

Sorry to be opening up an old thread.
We bought a car at the end of the month, it's been parked since the owner dropped it off. The car is out of tax long before we bought the car. We haven't received the book yet, but it was registered the very last day of the month, however we are required to pay for the registration for September, seems it was registered then. Is it possible to only have to pay it from October, it seems unfair we have to cover September, it's already so expensive, without that?
Now I'm a realist and I under stand if it's in my name I must tax, but is there a loop hole! I'm raging about it.

    Advice?

You're responsible for Motor Tax from the date of transfer of ownership as shown on the VLC (log book). Unfortunately for you if that date is anytime in September then you are liable for arrears for the month of September.

One way to avoid arrears is to transfer ownership to someone else and then back to you however you need the VLC and go through the whole process that takes time, it may have insurance implications, and it also adds 2 more previous owners to the car's history. I don't think that option is practical as you can't legally drive around untaxed in the meantime.
The cost of one month's arrears is miniscule compared to the overall cost of car ownership and maintenance. Pay it and enjoy your purchase.
