I actually don't mind the look of it, think the control pad and buttons should maybe be nearer bottom but Santa might well consider it for younger kids who can't use the 3d visuals. I'm interested enough in it anyway.

They had the chance for dual analogue and they blew it!!

    Its a budget release tbf.
Think they should of just did a 3DS XL and taken out the 3D switch & improve the battery, i'd of been all over that.

Imagine an actual Circle pad pro for this son of the bitch! :pac: My 3ds XL already feels like a brick with that thing on, I can imagine what it will do to this "Beauty" :pac:

Are the screen size and battery life going to be same as original 3ds? Just think it might be an option for my 5 year old, maybe a bit more robust? No hinges to break.

No hinges to break but nothing protecting the screens either. For the money you could get a cheap tablet or a second hand 3DS / XL... It's no longer as portable a gaming system, it's more something for the car or the house. And no 3d - so bang goes both the 3DS's major selling points. don't really see the need for this.

Designer of the 2ds has been revealed

Looks mental, doesn't make sense to gamers, it'll sell millions.

All that room down the bottom right though and they couldn't add a second thumbstick?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,822 ✭✭✭✭K.O.Kiki

    Selling points:
    • Cheaper - American RRP of $130 (40 less than 3DS, 70 less than 3DS XL/ Vita)
    • More durable body (due to hingeless design)
    • Better battery life/frame rate than 3DS - afaik the screen is actually a single unit, separated by plastic. That and the removal of 3D means a more efficient screen, so hopefully an extra few hours of gaming

I'm interested. Never saw the point of 3D gimmicks.

    *edit*
And I'm glad they didn't add a second analog stick.
    Would create feature disparity.
Also, why use analog when you have a touchscreen? You lot are mental.

I think it looks well. The placement of the buttons is interesting, I find the 3DS a bit cramped at times so it'd be nice to have more to hold like the original GBA.

Knowing Nintendo, there'll be a 2DSXL along if it sells well :p

I never use the 3D as it is as I prefer to have a longer battery life.

The release date and the colours are designed to tie in with the release of Pokemon X and Y on the same day. I suppose the idea is to appeal to younger Pokemon players who don't or can't use the 3D feature.

To me, it looks ok, but I've always liked the slight tilt on the top screen of the DS and thats missing here

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 30,123 ✭✭✭✭Star Lord

It's really for those that can't or don't want to use the 3D.

I keep thinking its an April Fools. It just looks so stupid...

.. Or to dual-cart X Y buyers who need a cheap solution for trading with themselves! Good thinking!

Worst thing is with this coming out the same day as X/Y we can forget about a nice 3DSXL Pokemon special edition bundle.

Wonder could people be reading in 10 years time Nintendos venture into the tablet market was it's downfall.

I'm not knocking the 3ds I just didn't like the 3d it just didn't appeal to me. I don't think it's a true 3d image you have to focus to see the 3d working it doesn't seem like a natural image..

In saying that the games for 3ds are first class!!

Actually bad point on the 2ds is screens are same size as 3ds not crazy about that I like big screens :)

They had the chance for dual analogue and they blew it!!

They didn't blow it, it'd be an absolute waste of their time and money to include it.

As it stands, there's a mere handful of titles out of the entire library that use it, so most people don't need it. If a dev puts out a game that needs it, they've got this fractured owner base of who can and can't use it.

Unless console hardware comes equipped with something straight out of the box, it's only ever gonna be a target for a niche audience.

    It's no more of a trick than cinema 3d or side-by-side 3d or 80's 3d.
Only tangible difference being you may need to adjust the angle of your console to see the 3d image, whereas glasses don't let you move the image.
Most of the games are meh to me.

Looks fine there, but kids hands are an awful lot smaller./

Apparently it's just one really big screen with the chassis of the console framing it to look like the traditional dual screen set up, hence it's not a clamshell design.

Some people don't like using headphones with a handheld when they're at home. I know I don't.

I really like the 2DS I think it's great and if my kids didn't have 3ds already I would get this from videos I have seen they are made for kids and with the price they are a good first console for a young child. Might get one myself as a distraction on my breaks in college

    Hey all.
Just wondering when exactly it will be released in Ireland. Can't seem to find a concise answer online. Also, which games would be compatible with it from the nds

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,283 ✭✭✭RobertFoster

October 12th is the release date. It should be compatible with all DS games, except those that made use of the GBA port on the original DS/DS Lite (Rockband, etc. list here).

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,276 ✭✭✭readyletsgo

Anyone know what the price will be in Ireland? £109 on amazon.
Anywhere I can pre-order one? Can't imagine it's gonna sell out or anything.

gamestop don't have it listed. And I imagine it's gonna cost more than £109 I'm Ireland *rolls eyes*

Getting it for my niece for Xmas with 3d land (20quid in Gamestop at the moment which is weird)

I'm going to pick one up, just for games like Pokemon. Gotta get my fix.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,978 ✭✭✭GhostInTheRuins

I think I might get one if the price is right. I can't see the 3D on the 3ds anyway, and it doesn't look too bad. Judging by the picture above it looks fairly comfortable to use.

Is that a good idea? X/Y has Streetpass battling. You really want to cart around that monstrosity? Get a 2nd hand 3DS original, they fit in your pocket not on your back :)

Actually I wonder what the battery life will be like. A friend had a 3ds original and he told me how the battery life was really bad, that he had to charge it after a couple of hours of use.

K.O.Kiki suggests the battery should be better, don't think there is any conclusive proof to back that up, but it all makes total sense and think they are probably right.

Bit of a missed opportunity to stick in a bigger capacity battery. Could have been easily done given the larger size of the 2DS.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,485 ✭✭✭✭Banjo

Would have raised the price, and since it's designed to be rugged and cheap rather than ultra-portable I don't think it's a mortal blow.

The screen should break considerably easier I'd have thought.

    No hinge to snap though!

The main breaking point of the 3DS/DS etc is the hinge. I've never seen inside a 3DS, but I'd assume it works something similar to the DS. Mainboard on the bottom section with a ribbon cable feeding up through the hinge to the top screen.

If the ribbon cable is at all damaged on the DS, then the top screen will no longer function. Likewise, I'd say the same thing will happen with the 3DS (Unless they've somehow managed to remedy this, not sure how though?)

Screen breakage on the 2DS will be a completely different matter. That'll need to happen due to it being exposed. So scratches, etc.

I would imagine a dropped 2DS will withstand more than a dropped 3DS as the hinge is quite a weak point.
