My mum went to a consultant the other day and was told she has cataracts in both eyes

The first is to be done in November and 2nd in December.

We can manage to cover first surgery but second one, we are unsure can we

Can we put that one back does anyone know.
We were not expecting this cost

She has a medical card but as specialist was in a private hospital, she was told it was not covered.

    Just looking for advice, thanks.

More suitable in the main forum Quiko.

Am I right to assume you don't have health insurance?

    Is this issue about costs?

Would you consider going public for both? Would be worth a chat with the consultant involved, who might well have a public practice somewhere as well.

You are entitled to get it done on the public system at no cost (the issue is the wait though).
Ask the consultant to refer you onto a public hospital for further treatment and be upfront about the reasons (you may be surprised with the reaction).
