Nct Question

    Hi i have a car that has been of the road so the nct is up on it puting it back on the road next month. It will be out of nct 9 months then and in the 3 months gap for the next nct does any one know if when i nct it will the nct cert be for 3 months or for 15 months.

    Just looking at a few threads on the net and it seems that you will have to do the test now and then again in 3 months ( or book it in twice, once for this year and then immediately for next year) seem crazy but seems to be the method. Although I would make sure you'll pass the first before booking the second.

    From what I can see you can't "miss" a year.

    If it's out for less than 9 months then you'll get a cert for 3 months, over 9 months and you'll get one for 15.

    Are you sure, all the threads I keep seeing are people saying how they booked the overdue car in twice within minutes of each other, maybe they just assumed they had to and never checked?

    I've never heard of this. Cars can be tested up to 6 months early for a first test, up to 3 months early for subsequent tests.

    I have another question, I have a 2008 car that's never been NCT'ed, if I get it done this year will I have to do it again next year?

    What happens if I just do it next year?

    I know you can get a car tested three months before its up meaning if you are in month ten you can choose to get it tested for both years hence the aforementioned 15 month cert or rather a two year cert backdated to when the last cert expired.

    If you do it now the cert will be valid to 2014, if you do it within 3 months before the date of first reg next year you'll get a cert to 2016.

    Only legislation covering NCT dates is this (with further amenmnets):

    It clearly says that car can be tested 90 days before due date (or 180 days before first due date).
    It doesn't say that if you skip some period, then next due date becomes void.

    All what counts is due date, which comes as anniversary of first registration in following schedule:
    after 4 years of first registration
    after 6 years of first registration
    after 8 years of first registration
    after 10 years of first registration
    after 11 years of first registration
    after 12 years of first registration
    etc...

    So. if someone's car will be 11 years old in 89 days, and was never NCTed beforehand, it will still get a cert valid until 12th anniversary date - which will be 15 months.

    Skipped NCT periods don't matter.

    As above.
    For instance if a car was not NCT'd for 8 years, would you then have to do 8 (or 9) tests to get a valid cert ???? Of course not.
    The only real problem is where you get a car tested just before the 3 month 'advance' period. This would then give you a cert valid for 4 months or so depending on when the car is due.
