    Hi

I'm looking into booking a round of golf as a present for my dad. His handicap is around 18 or 19. He is a member of Mullingar Golf club and has played a lot in other nearby courses like New Forest and Castle Barna. I'm thinking of buying him a round at Carton House but I'm wondering if it would be too hard for him. I don't play golf myself so I'm not sure, but I assume it's a tough course if they've played the Irish Open there. Would he be likely to find the course too long and / or hard to be enjoyable? How much harder would it be than 'average' courses? If not Carton House, any other suggestions for courses that would be within an hour of Mullingar and would make a good present?

    Thanks for any tips!

Any golfer playing off 18 should be able for any course.
Fwiw Carton has 2 course so depending on the time of year i would let him decide which course to play.
The monty course imo lacks a bit of feel, the o'Meara is nicer but nothing special.
How far would Concra Wood be from you?,that's something a bit different, tough but nice and also throw in Kileen Castle as a possible.

Carton House would be ideal - for an 18 handicapper, I would suggest the O'Meara course over the Montgomerie Course

Thanks very much everyone, I wasn't expecting replies so quickly. I'll go ahead with the O Meara course in Carton House so. Bob, thanks for the other suggestions, they look very good but they're further away, Carton House is only an easy drive up the M4 so I'll stick with it. Concra Wood looks to have a great setting right on the lake though!

    Thanks again folks

Just one thing to remember, even if he plays a fantastic course.....its no fun on your own!!

Thanks Charlie, yeah we are going to book it for two people. I took 78 shots to get round a pitch and putt course a few weeks ago so I'll let him bring one of his usual golf buddies rather than go myself :)

if you are going with Carton House, choose The O'Meara course as others have suggested. I've played both and we ended up a bit frustrated looking for balls in the high rough on The Monty Curse ( most of us were playing off around 18)

New holes are opening September 7th for the second day of the captains prize in Carton house. Limited availability I think after that...
