SU Ball 2014?

Heard today that Curley and Stitt (SU Prez and Education from last year) applied for and got €100,000 from the college for some one day festival as a RAG week alternative. Haven't heard much more about it but it'll apparently be like UCD ball (no formal wear, festival like). If it goes ahead will definitely be massive depending on how it's organised, could be much bigger than the commerce ball/arts ball have to offer because of spending power on acts. On another note heard they got money for the postgrad officer to be paid next year.

Heard all this on the grapevine so ill believe it when I see it, but still, could be something to look forward to.

They tried holding a "University Ball" last November, which was an utter failure. But that wasn't organised by the SU.

If it is going ahead, it'll have to be carefully planned. Money is short and people aren't willing to take a risk buying a ticket to a potentially boring event. Plus, NUIG doesn't have a history of balls, so it'll need a serious marketing machine to generate hype; it won't be able to rest on just the lineup like Trinity Ball does.

What a colossal waste of money that would be...

There was rumours all over the place about this last year too. It was initially rumoured that a stage was going to be erected in Daingean and that big acts like Ed Sheeran were headlining.

Think it ended up being in the College Bar with Byrno headlining. Now I love Byrno more than life, but you'd expect more from the rumours that were going around.

Won't hold my breath on this anyway.

I thought it was Labyrinth that was supposed to be playing playing but pulled out and they were going to have it all around the Áras na MacLéinn with 4,000 or so. It wouldn't need that much to be successful, look at Moxegen.

On a side note: it probably will affect the Commerce Ball alot, and those going to balls will be more those who want to go to balls...

The problem with the University ball last year (IMO) was that formal wear wasn't enforced. You had people there in jeans and tshirt, so it lost atmosphere.

Also do you really want to have a ball where you'll be sitting exams in a couple weeks? It needs to be a little more special than something on campus.

Certain societies pull off great balls (other peoples opinions not mine) every year without €100,000 padding and make a profit (see arts ball). I think the SU has more important things the money and time should be spent on.
