Drum Machines? Pads?

    Howdee all,

Obviously, VST plugins would do the same trick, but I'm looking for some electro drum machine sounds. Not looking to replicate an acoustic kit using an electro kit, but maybe something strictly electro sounding.

For example, like some of the Massive Attack, Tv on the Radio, Portishead stuff..

I like the feel of being able to play the parts as opposed to programming them. Apart from not being an expert at fills etc, I'd like to explore this option.
So, should I look at something like drum pads, like the rectangular ones you see some drummers use, or should I look at a cheap electro kit on adverts?

I'd be inclined to go with one of those Roland drum pads, that way you get to hit the pad as if it was a kit for timing etc, but you won't have the delay and mis-hits of a cheap electronic kit.

Another method is an MPC as a drum sampler, you could use it for loads of different stuff too.
