In the boozer last night with a friend who had been made redundant from his job of 10 years. He was made redundant in June. He was talking about how hard its been for him to find a job in his field. Luckily he's no mortgage or kids. He said he was thinking of taking a week or two, going abroad to chill out and clear his head. (He's living off his redundancy money.)

An old man sitting a couple stools down from us misheard what my friend had said, interfered and told my mate he has been milking the system and is not entitled to a holiday. At this point I'd like to add my mate has not yet signed on and has moved back into his parents house until he finds a new job. He assumed my mate has been on the dole for the last ten years.

The aul fella proceeded to tell us that anyone long term unemployed especially those with kids should be forced to hand up their passports because if they really need money from the social welfare as they are allegedly only scraping by then they are not in a position to go abroad on holidays. He also said this will also keep a lot of money in the country via stay-cations and people having to spend money in stores in Ireland (excluding those who go up north or the UK)

My mate told him that this is a bit draconian but he insisted that those who are truly scraping by and can't go on holiday won't have a problem in handing up their passports, that only those acting the b0ll0x with the welfare system and go away regularly will be the ones to kick up stink.

Should the LONG TERM unemployed who are claiming benefit hand up their passports. 22 votes

    Yes. I agree wholeheartedly.

Yes (but it is a bit of a draconian step to take)

No (but I can see the aul fella's point)

    No way that's too extreme.

I wonder what the auld fella thought of people using their passports to emigrate thus saving the irish state money in welfare payments?

The poor aul lad was probably a little senile, ignore him and move on.

There's your problem right there. The measured and appropriate response would have been something along the lines of,

"STFU and mind your own business"

    /Problem

Your passport is as much proof of your citizenship as it is a travel document. Everyone should have one.

That is one of the most blithering, window-lickingly daft things I've heard in the last month or so, and take it from me that is high praise. Having said that the Reichstroika will probably be at that very thing shortly.

    Bit harsh man.

My mate did set him straight and tell him that he heard us wrong. He was fairly well on so I'd say he just had an axe to grind and as soon as he got a tiny bit of what we were talking about decided to have a go. and as Teddytedson said he may have been a bit senile.

Why don't we just go the whole hog and feed the unemployed to the asylum seekers?

It amazing how easily you have quoted me and made it look so out of context. if you re-read my previous post you will see I was remarking on what another poster had written.

I can see the aul fella's point and I barely agree but not enought to approve of the concept. People go away for a week or two and bring about €1000-2000 (very approx amounts) especially with kids so why shouldn't they be forced to spend that money in the Irish economy and thus putting money back into the state coffers from whence it came. However I'd say what will happen there is it'll start off with the long term unemployed then it will work its way up to being the kind of thing where if you want to sign on for benefit you surrender your passport from day one and that's opening a can of worms that will never close.

It's the passports who are the really enemy in all of this.

He should be signing on though. He has paid PRSI for the last 10 years and that is more than enough to claim his jobseekers benefit for 9 months.

Even if he can't get a payment because his redundancy is too large (doubtful) he should be signing on for PRSI credits - it could affect his pension down the line if he doesn't

Also if he is not signing on he may not be eligible for other types of social welfare or employment assistance - if he wanted to retrain he can't do any fas courses or get back to education allowance

It was so much easier to blame it on Them. It was bleakly depressing to think that They were Us. If it was Them, then nothing was anyone's fault. If it was us, what did that make Me? After all, I'm one of Us. I must be. I've certainly never thought of myself as one of Them. No one ever thinks of themselves as one of Them. We're always one of Us. It's Them that do the bad things.

It's always funny when fools like this guy tell people about these "eureka ideas" they've spent ages thinking about, ideas they think will solve so many problems and make everything better, yet crucially, ideas that are in fact retarded.

We discussed all of this last night. He says he does't want to sign on because he is fortunate to be in a position where at the moment he can afford to finance himself and he has a roof over his head. He said if he gets a job before he runs out of cash then signing on has been completely unnecessary and a waste of tax money.

Or maybe anybody on the dole should be forced to holiday in Germany so the money can really go back to where it came from:D
