Hi all. Playing 36 holes this coming Saturday in a club competition and was just wondering if anyone had any tips for keeping alert and concentration at their peak for the duration? Any particular foods or drinks I should take with me? The turnaround time between rounds is very short so not enough to get a clubhouse dinner in. I normally eat a nutri grain bar during my normal rounds but I find them very bland and dry but I suppose they keep me someway energised. Any help is appreciated.

I honestly think it's not as gruelling as people think... if you're playing well, you'll bounce to the 19th tee like you're only out of bed... if you're struggling, you'll feel exhausted, you know yourself :)

Personally, I think a couple bottles of water, a banana or two and a small lunchbox filled with mixed nuts and dried fruit is perfic'...

    Night before, eat brown pasta

Morning of - eat Porridge for brekkie and try to also eat 4 scrambled eggs or an omelette

Mid Morning - Nutrigrain or Fig Rolls

Lunch - lots of protein and some carbs, avoid white bread and starchy carbs.

Mid afternoon - more of the Fig Rolls/Nutrigrains

Evening - replenish with protein and veg, don't overdo carbs.

Drink water every 2-3 holes. Thirst is a sign that you're already dehydrated.

Jaffa cakes are a must every few holes during the second round

Simplest but best piece of advice you'll get. If your club does them worth hiring one out if you don't already own an electric trolley.

Provided the weather plays ball 36 hole comps are a great day out.

Sounds daft but a change of socks after 18 holes

To be frank, I think you are in more danger of messing with your head than anything else. If you are reasonably fit, it should not be a problem. If you are typically knackered after 18, then no faddy diet is going to help much.

Pasta loading is mildly helpful but it is mostly used as a depletion/loading trick prior to endurance events. It involves starving the body of carbs for a period and then binging in the final 24-36 hours. You don't have time to do that and I'm not convinced it would help much; you won't be getting into glycogen debt - just muscle tiredness.

A good night's sleep, porridge for breakfast and bring water, some bananas and a few energy bars in the bag and you should be right. If you are desperate, a can of Red Bull might help but I hate the stuff.

The electric trolly and socks change are good ideas too! And comfy, well-fitting shoes.
