I am doing BA joint Honours (History and Economics) degree going into first year. Can somebody please explain to me the levels of modules? Should I only be looking at level one because I am a first year? I really have no idea about this stuff any help would be appreciated

Technically you can take any level module you want (if the module has no pre-requisites) but I'd recommend only taking Level 1s in first year. Obviously some people are more capable than others, but more than likely a first year is going to find level 2s and 3s very difficult, having no experience with college assignments and exams, and you'll notice it's mostly 2nd and 3rd years taking them. In 2nd year you might want to go ahead and take a few level 3s so that you've got enough level 3 credits to be able to take an easier (i.e. level 1) module in your final year when you've more on your plate. There's information on module levels here and you should refer to your BA registration guide here. Hope that helps, and best of luck in UCD :)

Modules range from Level 0 to Level 5. Most of the modules you do in 1st year will be Level 1. In a year you are expected to take 12 modules.

In the BA Joint, you will have up to Level 3's on offer - Level 4 and 5 are usually post grad modules or part of 4-5 year degrees.
As a 1st year, you can take other modules - I took a Level 2 module without having any difficulties, but unless you have a background in the subject I'd stay away from the Level 3. Level 4 and upwards will be unavailable to you.

How to tell the difference is pretty simple

HIS10070 - The making of modern Europe - HIS is code for History, the first number '1' is the level - remaining 4 numbers are reference
    HIS20670 - The French Revolution - HIS Code - '2' for Level 2
    HIS31300 - Culture and Revolution - HIS Code - '3' for Level 3.

Economics is the same - ECON10010 for example.
