Has anyone manually upgraded their rom to get the amber update using the Nokia Care Suite. I'm trying to do this at the moment but am getting a strange error message....also I'm not sure if I'm using the right rom?

    any help?

I followed the instructions over on WPCentral - link here, it includes the links to the roms and the suite. Have been using since my unbranded UK 920 would be one of the last to receive the update like previous updates.

I did it about a week and a half ago.. see my thread here (post #27 specifically). Went fine and now using an unbranded French GDR2/Amber ROM

DK's link above looks pretty good though

just updated with DK's link...easy as pie...I think the step i was missing was having the phone plugged in before it was necessary. Now to explore the amber update ;0)

how long did the update take from start to finish ? Nokia are still reporting the update as "Coming Soon" for my phone and they won't answer tweets about when it's ready. Losing my patience at this stage

If I remember correctly it was about 10-20 minutes to flash the phone, and then an hour or so re-installing all apps/re-organising the start screen.

and is it the standard GDR2/Amber update ? It's not AT&T specific or anything ?

Yep DK's times are about right....seems like a generic enough upgrade to me (i.e. not AT&T specific)

Care Suite only has non Amber for the country variants of IE and GB for the Lumia 820. Shame that..was looking forward to bumping my phone to Amber! :)

You can install the one in the link and it'll work fine. I have it working perfectly on eMobile. However as always, you do these things at your own risk!

Also bruce, did you wipe the phone first then? I just installed the update as is and it kept the homescreen and my settings. No issues here anyway :)

I backed up the phone and the update restored the phone, so when it powered up I had the option of restoring it from my back up, all my apps/photos/contacts were restored but the home screen defaulted back to normal.

Had to set everything back to the way I like it....no biggy.

only thing I lost was my music and document files....but I just manually copied them to my laptop and then copied them back.

Tried this and failed several times to connect after step 10 in the list. Gonna reboot computer and try once more

No Joy...partly relieved that I didn't ruin my phone and partly disappointed it didn't work.

    which instructions did you use?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 530 ✭✭✭bruce wayne

I think the main mistake I made was that I originally had my phone connected at the earlier steps...but the key seems to be to wait until step 10 to even connect your phone to your machine.

In other words start the restore with no phone connected and then when it identifies a lost connection.....plug in your phone (turned off) and you will get an on-screen message to hold the volume down button and the power button at the same time....wait for ten seconds and then you will get a vibration and release both buttons. The restore should kick off at that point.

I followed the linked instructions on wpcentral. I didn't connect until step ten and my phone was off but I pressed the buttons before being prompted. Maybe that was the problem. I'll give it another go after a recharge later
