Just wondering does anyone here use additives on baled silage? We have some silage that's fit to cut but still quite leafy and grassy and just worried about it being sour etc....don't have access to a turner...not sure if our contractor has applicator but was wondering are additives a good job in bales?if so which products?....not many seem to use them around here...

Silage additive only necessary in wet to preserve. Mow it dry and it will be fine
All others like that stuff you buy to throw down a toilet, has to be the con of the century. Throwing money down the jax!!!

thanks for reply delavel..i suppose we mowed silage like it a few years ago and it ended up unpalatable enough so I was just thinking was there a product that could help the fermenting process...there isnt alot of drying in the days now so it would be likey to be baled somewhat damp....we would have baled grass damp before too and it was grand but that grass was more mature/bulky...this is quite leafy so just thought it would do no harm to see if others were doing something about it....

only one i would recommend is britmilk multiferm, i use quite few depending what the customer suppies but have seen the results of this and is the only one i would use myself now, it was applied so bales could be fed in two days and they opened 100% fermented and no lose nor refusal also seen it in the silo and same results, two days fermented and no lose.

Hedge your bets until you feed it out.

You could always use some molasses then if they are tough about eating it.

I have fed bales after 1 hr and no loss:confused: baling in less that ideal conditions, clovers, shoulders of the season etc, additive is beneficial

as easy as applying them with a forager, just make sure you get the rate right. Good few of the contractors set up for it around here

Around here some of the lads with good cows use on bales all the time. Sales rep supplies an applicator that fits on front of tractor
