Copyrighted stuff on Youtube. How?

Just out of curiousity, why can some films and tv shows stay on Youtube to be watched in their entirety yet others would be deleted within hours of being uploaded? And the same with music, 75 minute videos of an album played in its entirety ripe for mp3 conversion, a lot less hassle than using the Torrent services- the record companies despise Pirate Bay yet most of the same stuff is on Youtube anyway, albeit not seperated track by track. There is the odd situation with Love Hate for example- the series is there in full (although I should warn you, the final episode cuts off 10 minutes from the end) but all title intro music and all background music is cut (e.g. if they are in a nightclub or pub there is an odd silence from where the added in music from the tv version has been removed for copyright reasons).

Anyone know why they care? Is it a case of them doing nothing unless the tv or record company forces them? For example there is very little in the way of old BBC shows on Youtube, yet I was watching episodes of Cracker from ITV recently and they all seem to be there.

It's the decision of the copyright holder. Also, a lot of stuff that's there isn't meant to be and will be taken down if reported.

So why do they remove music from within a tv show but let the same track be freely available solo on a different upload?

Because they haven't found the other one yet?

With regards the music in the background its odd but there is a chance that youtube would flag it quicker if there was music.

For example if you record a gig and put it up you'll find that google will have tagged it as the band and even get the name of the song. It works the same way Shazam works in a way. Now if youtube have a list of copyrighted songs that record companies have given them to remove that clip will get flagged for review. when reviewed its seen as copyrighted and removed.

Its easier to tag music than the speech so it would get removed quicker.

In some cases though record companies and youtube have a kinda truce. Youtube is HUGE remember, millions and millions of users and music is one of the main attractions. If the company goes in and aggresively ask for removal of a user for posting a song it would look bad especially as youtube is streaming only (well officially it is) and not very user friendly if you wanted a pandora or rdio exoerience.

People will set up playlists and get into your music and look for more etc. You will find some that do remove them but there is usually some reason for this or the company is very strict.

With TV shows/movies however they act a lot quicker and remove them as watching them on youtube is pretty much the same as streaming on netflix or on tv. thats a direct competition on them so to protect their profits they are very agressive in this way (most of the time)

Clips etc can often get through though under the fair use policy as long as you are not making money off it

Ages ago I put up some youtube videos of bad karaoke amongst a group of friends - Youtube wouldnt let me upload them because of copyright breach

It was so much easier to blame it on Them. It was bleakly depressing to think that They were Us. If it was Them, then nothing was anyone's fault. If it was us, what did that make Me? After all, I'm one of Us. I must be. I've certainly never thought of myself as one of Them. No one ever thinks of themselves as one of Them. We're always one of Us. It's Them that do the bad things.

Isn't an awful lot of youtube cover versions of songs?? I thought cover versions were OK.

Perhaps your renditions were so perfect and like the originals that Youtube thought they were the actual recordings.

It's like pirating software or taking bribes or illegal parking on a rainy day.

just because you get away with it doesn't make it legal.

It's easier for a large studio to check for copyright than a one man band. Sometimes a blind eye is shown until market share has increased.

Big factor would be people reporting on them - you can have videos there full of copyrighted stuff, but is so obscured because not a lot of people have seen it yet.

You can also have videos that aren't found through searching, but just through linking.

I found this weird also. I had a few videos of my brother's wedding refused probably cause of music in the background. Uploaded another video but they allowed it except for Germany :) Couple of others all I had to do is link it to a song.

Then there's android apps on the Playstore with new Hollywood releases on Youtube

Germany require a payment ANYTIME music is used/heard.

Its why there was no way to see the metorite footage from Russia last year. Most of the clips had music as they were on dashcams and IIRC Germany would have demanded 1c from youtube off every view. So youtube banned them all in Germany
