To play it safe, I would always try to stick to places which have independent reviews on Trip Advisor and the like. The place you have linked to doesn't seem to have any reviews. That might just mean its new on the market or it is only rented from time to time. But to be on the safe side, try find a review.

i was looking at renting the likes of http://www.tripadvisor.ie/VacationRentalReview-g189116-d4750784-Faro_New_Apt_Center_beach_airport-Faro_Faro_District_Algarve.html
but i was wondering how safe it is? i mean, anyone could set up a page and get a deposit for an accomodation wherever it is on the planet. how would i know this is genuine? the apartment looks nice but i really hesitate to book. any advice, please?

i advertise our algarve apartment on trip advisor. with holiday rentals on trip advisor, it works differently to hotels/restaurants, you have to have a listing with either flipkey (america/canada) or holiday lettings (europe). as an holiday home owner, we go through intensive checks to make sure our property is legit.
