Spare router at home...

I am moving into university accommodation in september which only has internet access via ethernet, there is no wireless in any of the accommodation buildings.

If I bring down a spare router from my house at home, can I just hook it up to one of the ports in the kitchen and expect it to work or will I need to do something with it?
