    Hi guys,
Before I went to UCD I did a year of another course. Thus, when I switched to my new course in UCD(2012/2013) I had to pay full fees.
However,Iv gone about trying to register for 2013/2014 and am yet again being charged full fees?Anybody know why this could be?Who specifically should I contact about this?
    Thanks a lot

Get in touch with the student desk tomorrow and ask them to check up on it.

If you drop out of a course / leave a course, don't you forfeit the chance of free fee's for 5 years or so? So if you go into a course during that time, you pay full fee's every year during the course inside that 5 year period (or so).

Nope, as far as I know you're entitled to one 'free' course, but if you use up one year of that then drop out you only have to pay for one year.

Yes I think you're entitled to up to 4 years of "free fees", so you shouldn't have to pay full again.

when did you drop out? May have an impact on what fees you have to pay

I don't think it works that way, anyone I know who dropped out of a course had to pay full fees for the years they already did, not when a total of 4 years had gone by.

No. I done a year of another course before I studied in UCD. I paid full fees in first year and was brought back to "free fees" from second year.

This happened me in second year too. For a little while it had not registered I was back to free fees. But just ring the student desk and they'll transfer you to someone to make sure it'll all be sorted.

    According to UCD

    http://www.ucd.ie/registry/adminservices/fees/free_tuition.htm
if you are not a current school leaver[...] you may need to provide us with some documentation

just send them an email via the student desk connector

Exact same thing is after happening me, I had to do the self assess thing here http://www.ucd.ie/registry/adminservices/fees/free_tuition.htm
and get proof of what had been paid by the HEA on my behalf to where I previously went to university.

My understanding is you have 4 years (i.e. A Level 8) of free fee's or until you graduate. i.e. If the course is 3 years, you pretty much forfeit a year.

However, you only get a year free, so if you do a first year and drop out, your next 'first year' you'll have to pay close to full fee's. Your second year will then be 'free fee's' as per usual etc until you graduate.

I know for sure you cannot just keep sampling courses and get free fee's indefinitely.

Level 8 degrees can be 5 or 6 years too, ironclaw.
Med or Vet Med students get their 5th & 6th years fees paid for.

Yeah, sorry. I wasn't entire sure was it to a certain level, for a certain amount of time or until one graduates. I just took the standard 4 years Level 8 for my example. I'd imagine the likes of Medicine and Architecture are exceptions given the length of the degree.

If you do the full 5 years of both Architecture or Engineering, in Arch you end up doing a 3 year BSc (Hons) in Architectural Science, and a 2-year MArch; and with Engineering it's a 3-year BSc in whatever kind of Eng it is you do, and a 2-year ME... I dunno if the later ones qualify for free fees, since they're past undergrad level. Vet and Med degrees are all not past Bachelor's though, so I know they qualify.

With the Eng course, you do the three years, then post-pone your graduation to the end of 4th year. You then graduate with your BSc and the next year you graduate with your M.Eng. The idea behind postponing the graduation is that you are still entitled to one year of 'free fee's' as a result.

You can of course graduate at the end of year three, but then you have two full years of full fee's.

Folks, why not just give the OP a link to a primary source for the answer:

    Criteria for Determining Eligibility
    ...
    5. Tuition fees will also not be paid in respect of students undertaking a repeat year of study at the same year level. In this regard, this condition may be waived where evidence of exceptional circumstances, such as cases of certified serious illness, is provided.

Because if you know the regulations, there's no doubt but that the OP qualifies for free fees, based on what he has said.

It's common practice for students to have to remind UCD/ the HEA of their status. This can be done via getting in contact with the student desk or by clicking here

Sorry, I'm completely baffled by fees atm.

Are the fees Student Contribution Fee + Tuition Fee + Student Centre Levy or is it just the programme fee (ie ~ five and a half grand)?

Some guy in the arts programme office told me it was all three of them (so fees were 8k rather than 5.5 for arts).

Basic Arts DN500 Fees for this year

€3,126.00 - EU Free Fees Initiative (Paid by the State)

€2,500.00 - Student Contribution Charge (Paid by the Student/Grant)

€208.00 - Student Centre Levy (Paid by the Student)

    €5,834.00 - Total

Varies depending on course but that's how the breakdown works. (8k is average for medical stuff)

Brilliant. I had a bit of a melt down when a guy in the arts office said I had to pay 2500 + 208 + the programme fee <6000, that is a great relief!

Yeah the guy at the arts desk was definitely wrong.

The programme fee for arts isn't €6k.

Is there documentation for all this somewhere?

I'm just after finishing my B.Sc in Architectural Science this year and am due to graduate next week.

With the permanent change of the programme to an M.Arch from a B.Arch. finalised for the term of Sept 2014-May 2015 we've to pay full fee's for both years, but never heard of this as an option?
