Hello, I was hoping to get some direction, and advice on where to buy a computer to fulfil my requirements. I am a 3d designer but am totally ignorant of the internal workings of a computer. I will need a new one for using autocad, photoshop, sketch up and the rendering package vray. I want to buy the whole set up for a home office so new everything ie monitors, CPU etc. I would really appreciate if anyone had any recommendations for someone who could supply this and maybe what do you think I would need to run those program's comfortably. I'm in the south Dublin area. Thanks

Try filling the following form out. This is to help identify your needs, and hopefully give you a spec to price up (or look for quotes locally for). The guys here will generally price up a build as if you were buying the parts and assembling yourself, but seeing as it is a work set up you may be looking for some IT support as part of equipment supply, so keep in mind it will be more expensive.

    1. What is your budget? [€xxx]

    2. What will be the main purpose of the computer? [Gaming/Video editing/3D Modelling/HTPC/Internet] (If gaming include which games)

    3. Do you need a copy of Windows? [Yes/No]

    4. Can you use any parts from an old computer? [Hard drive/DVD Drive/Case/PSU/etc.] (If possible state brand and model of the parts to ensure compatibility)

    5. Do you need a monitor? [Yes/No]

5a. If yes, what size do you need. [19'/20'/22'/24'/etc.]

5b. If no, what resolution is your current monitor and do you plan to upgrade in the near future? [1920x1080/1440x900/etc.] [Yes/No]

    6. Do you need any of these peripherals? [Keyboard/Mouse/Wireless Card/Card Reader/Speakers/etc.]

    7. Are you willing to try overclocking? [Yes/No]

    8. How can you pay? [Bank Transfer/Credit Card/Laser]

    9. When are you purchasing? [In x days]

    10. If you need help building it, where are you based? [South Dublin City/Cork City/Kerry/etc.]

Thanks for the info sheet, here are my replies to the various questions. Any suggestions welcomed

    1. What is your budget? [€xxx]

About €1700. If it less all the better

    2. What will be the main purpose of the computer? [Gaming/Video editing/3D Modelling/HTPC/Internet] (If gaming include which games)

3D Modeling - Using Sketch up and rendering with Vray. Also using autocad, photoshop etc

    3. Do you need a copy of Windows? [Yes/No]

    Yes

    4. Can you use any parts from an old computer? [Hard drive/DVD Drive/Case/PSU/etc.] (If possible state brand and model of the parts to ensure compatibility)

No - All to be new

    5. Do you need a monitor? [Yes/No]

Yes- Two screen monitor set up preferably

5a. If yes, what size do you need. [19'/20'/22'/24'/etc.]

    2 x 19's would be fine i think

5b. If no, what resolution is your current monitor and do you plan to upgrade in the near future? [1920x1080/1440x900/etc.] [Yes/No]

    6. Do you need any of these peripherals? [Keyboard/Mouse/Wireless Card/Card Reader/Speakers/etc.]

Yes all the usual stuff required

    7. Are you willing to try overclocking? [Yes/No]

Would prefer not too as no experiane in that area but am open to suggestion

    8. How can you pay? [Bank Transfer/Credit Card/Laser]

    Any of the above

    9. When are you purchasing? [In x days]

Would like to get it sorted in the next few weeks

    10. If you need help building it, where are you based? [South Dublin City/Cork City/Kerry/

    How's does this look?

The xeon is basically the same as an i7 3770 without the igp. 16gb of ram should be plenty for your needs. Do you have any idea of how ram intensive the work you are doing is? You have room to expand to 32gb anyway.

The 760gtx will run most games at max settings with 60fps at 1080p.

Got a fast 250gb ssd for your os and programs. 4 x 1tb WD Blues for storage and workspace. The 1tb drives are faster than the bigger drives. You should set up 2 raids with them to create 2 even faster 2gb drives.

You could go with 2 x 1tb drives and the 120gb version of the same ssd if you think you don't need that much space and want to save some money.

HWVS offer a build service for €20 although it's only €5 this week. I'd advise you to build it yourself though. It's not too hard and there are a lot of guides online. The experience will help you troubleshoot any problems you may have in future + you will get all the boxes for all of the parts which helps in case you need to send anything back and you will get all of the warranty information for each part.

If you have any questions feel free to ask.

    Bloodbath,

Thank you very much with your help, its much appreciated.
The rendering program vray which I will want to be using requires
a good bit of ram to keep it going so I may possible up that.
I really would not be up to putting it together myself so would be
looking for the finished PC ready to use. Is it HWVS you would recommend?
Or would you have any recommendations for someone/company in the Dublin
area who could get me up and running?

    thanks again for your advice.

    No bother.

Well they offer the build service anyway.

You aren't going to get anything like the specs or quality of the above pc for that kind of money if going with a company.

I would say if you want the same quality/specs you would be looking at nearly 2.5k+ from most companies.

PC specialist would probably be your best bet if you want to go with a company though.
